Trump and Twitter

Elon Musk says Twitter’s suspension of former President Trump was “foolish,” “morally wrong,” and “flat-out stupid.” This has kicked off a fresh batch of commentary from both sides concerning Trump’s potential return to Twitter.

News Coverage from the Right: Musk Reveals What Will Happen to Trump's Twitter Ban (PJ Media)

From the Flag: Twitter first decided to suspend Trump’s account following the events of January 6, 2021. Here’s how both sides are reacting to Musk’s plans for the social media platform as it pertains to Trump.

Trump May Have Passed Twitter By, Despite His Connection to Musk

  • If former President Trump returns to Twitter it could actually harm him politically, as being off the social media platform has limited his exposure to voters and put a spotlight on President Biden’s failures.
  • Elon Musk and Trump are similar in many ways, given their entrepreneurial background and willingness to go against the grain, but that’s attracted enemies in both Washington DC and Silicon Valley.
  • The opposition Musk faced during his takeover bid is similar to how the political establishment fought Trump at every turn, and lessons can be learned from the former president’s experience on Twitter.

“Elon Musk Tempts Trump on Twitter” Editorial Board, The Wall Street Journal: “Elon Musk said Tuesday that he’d invite Donald Trump to return to Twitter if his acquisition of the social-media company succeeds, and good for him. Liberal Twitter is appalled, but we wonder if returning would help or hurt the former President. … With him out of the spotlight, Americans haven’t had to listen to the daily controversies that dominated his Presidency and were a major reason he lost to Joe Biden, of all candidates. Instead the public focus has been on President Biden’s policies and their results. Voters can contrast today’s inflation and the rest to the relative policy success of the Trump years. If Mr. Trump is back in public view, picking fights on an hourly basis and blaming everyone else for his election defeat, he might
remind voters why they grew tired of his antics and made him a one-term President.”

“Trump and Musk: A Hard Row to Hoe” G. Murphy Donovan, American Thinker: “Elon Musk and Donald Trump have a lot in common -- wealthy entrepreneurs who actually get things done. … successful businessmen who work for a living, innovate, and actually create well-paying jobs in the private sector … Both are also outliers; marching to a different political drummer… Unfortunately, out in California and inside the Beltway; candor, change, and innovation can be dangerous. … To understand outsiders like Musk and Trump today, we should be clear about their opponents… gatekeepers who create, manipulate, and propagate convenient facts and dot com trash talk. For the most part; Trump’s – and now Musk’s -- critics are the liberal nomenklatura, bipartisan urban apparatchiks employed at the academy or at some level of government or working for some government contractor. This public sector is allied with a large liberal electronic and print media; embedded in urban one-party cultures.”

Twitter Isn’t Required to Gift Trump a Megaphone and Media Focus

  • Free speech is a serious issue and one that is protected by law, but Twitter is a private platform that has no obligation to host Trump or others like him that smear, attack, and incite violence.
  • It would be a mistake to think Trump’s return to Twitter would be good for Democrats, as it will inevitably lead to the media turning the spotlight back on his antics.
  • There is hope when it comes to keeping Trump off Twitter, in that pressure from the company’s employees could convince Musk to avoid lifting the account’s suspension.

“Musk is the one who’s ‘flat-out stupid’ about Trump on Twitter” Nicholas Goldberg, Los Angeles Times Opinion: “Twitter is a private platform, with broad free speech rights. … it can choose, if it wishes, to be a home for bigots, liars, demagogues and supporters of violence … Elon Musk can opt to stop policing content on his awesomely powerful new platform. He can populate Twitter with QAnoners and antisemites and shady Russian apologists and liars of all stripes, allowing them to spread disinformation and adding to political polarization … he can justify it in the name of unfettered freedom of expression. … I don’t mean to suggest that this is an easy, open-and-shut issue. Anyone who believes in and cares about free speech … has to think long and hard before coming out in favor of closing down opportunities for people to spread their messages. But I’m sorry. No private platform has an obligation to host Trump or others of his ilk.”

“Elon Musk's move threatens to bring Trump back to the White House” Jill Filipovic, CNN Opinion: “Elon Musk just threw a wrench in the next US presidential election -- to the benefit of Donald Trump. … Trump was permanently suspended after the January 6 riots; the company said it worried his tweets increased ‘the risk of further incitement of violence.’ But Musk is a self-styled free speech absolutist, who has criticized many of Twitter's efforts to reign in trolling and abuse on the platform. … Trump's return to Twitter, some commentators argue, would be a gift to Democrats. … I'm not so sure. … What so many of us didn't anticipate was that Trump's antics meant he owned the news cycle. Instead of discrediting him, that normalized him. … Much of this was made possible by Twitter. … (the) salon of politicians and journalists. Every time Trump tweeted, he had the attention of every political journalist in the country. For him, that was an unmitigated benefit.”

Free Speech Function and Questions of Propriety

In late March, before it became clear Musk planned to launch a Twitter takeover bid, he polled his followers asking if “Free speech is essential to a functioning democracy. Do you believe Twitter rigorously adheres to this principle?” After over two million votes, 70% said "no," and 30% said "yes."

Not long after January 6, 2021, a poll asked if Trump’s use of Twitter is inappropriate. Just under 65% said "yes," while 27% said "no" (YouGov).

Finally a recent survey conducted by the Boston Herald asked if Trump’s account should be reinstated, with 78% saying "yes," and 22% saying "no."
