Top Story: Ron DeSantis vs. 60 Minutes
Julia Manchester, writing in The Hill, reports: “Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is bolstering his position as a potential leading 2024 Republican presidential contender amid a high-profile battle with CBS’s ‘60 Minutes.’
The newsmagazine received widespread backlash from Republicans and some Democrats after it aired a piece Sunday alleging that DeSantis funneled COVID-19 vaccines to affluent Florida communities and privatized the vaccine rollout to benefit donors.
DeSantis vehemently denied any wrongdoing in the vaccine rollout, calling the claim ‘a fake narrative,’ but his insiders are relishing the fight with ‘60 Minutes,’ which has long been a target of the right. They say the fallout over the report will likely help bolster the governor’s profile as he is increasingly seen as an heir apparent to former President Trump.”
On The Left
The left is critical of CBS for botching this story and handing the Florida governor a political gift.
Chris Cillizza writes in CNN call this bungled story “manna from heaven” for the Florida governor since “multiple Democratic elected officials have come out to debunk the tie between the donation and Publix distributing the vaccine.” Not only are Democrats on the record saying that 60 Minutes got it wrong, but also that they “did so purposely.” Cillizza says “DeSantis couldn’t have written this script any better” and can go on collecting “love from Trump conservatives” while continuing to “bash away at the media.” Keep reading: ’60 Minutes’ just gave Ron DeSantis a massive gift
On The Right
The right is happy to accept this political gift and use it to build up the Florida governor’s credibility with Republican voters.
In Newsweek, Karol Markowicz calls the 60 Minutes story “dishonest” and “convoluted” and the reporter, Sharyn Alfonsi, “deeply unethical” and “like a political activist.” She says that Alfonsi “had a narrative she wanted to push and she actively did that with the support of 60 Minutes.” Markowicz accuses them of targeting DeSantis because he “recognized early that lockdowns just weren’t working” and “guided Florida to far better results than states like NY, NJ, and MI…all of which favored strict lockdowns that had a destructive effect on their economy.” Keep reading: The Media Tried to Smear Ron DeSantis. It Backfired.

According to St. Pete Polls, DeSantis and his anticipated Democrat rival are in a dead tie, both with 45% support in a hypothetical matchup. The governor, however, performs better with his base with 76% Republican support versus Fried’s 72% among Democrats. Independents, however, prefer Fried 46% to 42% and so despite DeSantis’ recent rise he apparently has a fight on his hands.
