Good morning! This Sunday is Juneteenth, a day commemorating the end of slavery in America. This state was the first one to declare Juneteenth a state holiday.

Plus, Sunday is also Father's Day. In case you missed it, we have fun shirts, grilling aprons, mouse pads, and mugs with classic dad-isms on them. Check 'em out.

JAN. 6

Panel Playback

On Thursday, the January 6 House Select Committee held its third public hearing. Lawmakers focused most of the day's inquiry on conversations between former President Donald Trump and his Vice President Mike Pence.

News Coverage from the Left: Jan. 6 committee releases new video ahead of third hearing on the Capitol riot (CBS)

News Coverage from the Right: MSNBC, CNN, ABC, CBS gush over Jan. 6 committee hearing, tout TV ratings: ‘A big deal’ (Fox News)

From The Flag: Here’s a recap from each side as to what’s been revealed through the committee's investigations.

RIGHT-LEANING SENTIMENT

This is a Farce

  • The committee makes valid points but will fail to deliver a major political blow to Trump.
  • Democrats are hypocrites who want to prosecute violence from the right without blinking twice at violence from the left.
  • Fox News is under no obligation (legal or journalistic) to broadcast these hearings, as there’s no shortage of access to them.

“These ‘January 6’ hearings are a farce” Sean Collins, Spiked: “The committee reminds us how the Democrats are incapable of convincingly prosecuting the case against Trump and winning people over to their side.
But while this Democrat-led committee has further exposed Trump’s irresponsible behaviour, it is unlikely to deal him a political knockout blow.
But the Democrats’ inability to persuade the public of Trump’s wrongdoing runs deeper than the obvious partisanship of the committee. As they did during the Trump years, when they routinely labelled Trump a ‘fascist’, the Democrats continue to overstate their case. So, during the committee hearings, the Democrats have insisted on calling the Capitol riot an ‘insurrection’. That’s a wild exaggeration: the 2,500-or-so people who entered the Capitol on 6 January were unarmed, and right-wing political groups, like the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers, were hardly about to overthrow the US government. The riot did disrupt and delay the certification of the election, but it didn’t actually stop it from happening.”

“The hypocrisy and disconnect of the partisan Jan. 6 probe” Miranda Devine, New York Post Opinion: “Dems are delusional if they think hysterically dramatizing the events of that sad day will help them in the midterms or move the dial one iota on public perception of the Biden administration’s failures. Our memories don’t lie. A two-tier system of justice that offers benign forbearance to violent Democratic allies who break the law and punitive zero tolerance toward nonviolent Trump supporters has destroyed any concept of accountability. We can’t forget the far more lethal BLM/Antifa riots in the months leading up to the 2020 election, which have gone largely unpunished. Just as the J6 rioters were Trump allies, the Antifa rioters were Democratic allies. One group rots in jail; the other continues its reign of terror unmolested. We can’t forget that the whole of Midtown was boarded up in anticipation of the violent riots everyone knew would greet a Trump win.”

LEFT-LEANING SENTIMENT

Our Democracy Was Threatened and Continues to Be Threatened

  • January 6 was an attempt to undermine our democratic institutions and it continues to this day.
  • Former President Donald Trump scammed America, and the committee is laying that out in painstaking detail.
  • It’s unclear if meaningful accountability will result from the hearing or if this threat to our Democracy could resurface.

“The sedition didn’t stop on Jan. 6. It must be stopped.” Karen Tumulty, Washington Post Opinion: “It is easy to imagine the stunts that people ... will pull if they are in positions of power come 2024. That is why it is imperative for voters to defeat them all — resoundingly, and across the board. They should take their lead from Georgia Republican voters, who in their May 24 primary defied Trump’s efforts to exact revenge on Gov. Brian Kemp and Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger ... Liz Cheney said at the hearing. ‘there will come a day when Donald Trump is gone, but your dishonor will remain.’ The same could be said for the American electorate. In primaries across the nation, and then again in November, they will have a choice. Will they stand for their nation’s democratic system, or will they cast their lot with those who wish to destroy it? The insurrectionists came perilously close to doing so on Jan. 6, 2021. The next time, they might succeed.”

“Trump scammed America. The January 6 panel is showing us how” Frida Ghitis, CNN Opinion: “[Trump] showed no compunction about tricking his supporters. In one of the most shameless scams, the Trump campaign extracted tens of millions of dollars by setting up the donations page on the campaign website that by default turned every donation into a recurring payment, according to reporting last year by the New York Times. The scam snagged huge amounts of money. Among those who got caught up in it were Trump supporters – including a cancer patient – who saw their bank accounts drained. Complaints about the scheme overwhelmed fraud lines at credit card companies, according to the Times report. Despite issuing more than $122 million in refunds, campaign spokesman Jason Miller downplayed the controversy, arguing campaign records showed only a small percentage of complaints. Not content with that shakedown, the campaign added another default setting, a so-called 'money bomb' that doubled the donation of Trump supporters they took for suckers.”

Trump Bears Responsibility, Support for Panel Growing, Viewership Down

Following the first public hearing, a POLITICO/Morning Consult poll showed a majority of Americans hold President Trump accountable for January 6. Specifically, 57% of Americans believe Trump is either “very responsible” or “somewhat responsible.”

It also seems voters’ approval of the January 6 panel has ticked up during the televised hearings. Last December, Morning Consult found approval was at 46%, but the most recent polling from last week has approval at 51%.

That said, viewership of the hearings is on the decline. Preliminary numbers from Nielsen Media Research show that 20 million people watched the first public hearing, while just half as many tuned in for the second.
