FOREIGN AFFAIRS

Winter Is Coming

As the colder months approach Europe is in the midst of an energy crisis. This is primarily due to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s decision to cut off natural gas deliveries to the continent, amid the ongoing invasion of Ukraine and resulting sanctions. Other factors include the move away from nuclear energy in countries such as Germany.

From The Flag: There are ongoing concerns tied to heating homes as well as generating enough electricity, given the natural gas shortage. This has set off a discussion about fossil fuels and the push for renewable energy sources. Here’s more from both sides.

LEFT-LEANING SENTIMENT

There Will Be Pain, but Gains Are Coming As Well

  • Listening in on conversations between electricity traders and grid managers paints a grim picture of what’s to come.

  • While the gas shortage is undeniable, it will lead to a better situation long term as European countries must learn to share energy.

  • Europe needs to ditch Russian natural gas once and for all by expanding shipments from Azerbaijan, Italy, the US, and Qatar.

“Listening to European Electricity Traders Is Very, Very Scary” Javier Blas, Bloomberg: “Every week, the people who trade electricity in the UK get to quiz the managers of the national grid for an hour. The conference call, which anyone can monitor, offers an insight into what the men and women on the front line of the power market are worried about. Listening to them is getting scarier by the week — and suggests keeping the lights on this winter will be a lot more challenging than European governments are admitting. Prices are worrying enough. … But the industry’s teleconference suggests the problem is broader than just rising costs. Increasingly, the words ‘emergency’ and ‘shortages’ are being used, with participants focusing on when, rather than if, a crisis will hit. Imagine being able to overhear conversations between Wall Street executives and the Federal Reserve as the global financial crisis unfolded in 2008.”

“Europe’s Energy Crisis Will Be Short-Lived & Reap Benefits” Michael Barnard, CleanTechnica: “European energy strategists were seduced by cheap natural gas flowing through massive pipelines from an increasingly rogue state even though natural gas was still a major global warming problem. Instead of concentrating on building a lot more renewables a lot more quickly, they built a lot of gas plants instead, asserting that gas was a major win over coal in terms of greenhouse gas emissions. Except it isn’t. … Germany’s massive expansion of renewables, now over 40% of annual demand with wind energy being the largest component, is trivially easy to balance with hydropower from Scandinavia, nuclear from France, and wind energy from Spain. … Germany, France, Norway, Sweden, and in fact every western European country with the possible exception of Britain are solid, reliable, and stable trading partners. Strategic energy interdependence among these countries is very reasonable.”

The People of Europe Get Frozen Out While Climate Activists Celebrate

  • As Europe braces for a cold and dark winter, it’s a scary sign of what will result elsewhere – if climate activists have their way.

  • Germany has hamstrung its economy and harmed its citizens by prioritizing radical climate policies favored by the elites.

  • In a shocking development, China is importing natural gas it doesn’t need and then selling it to Europe at a higher price.

“Energy Shortages In Europe Are A Preview Of The ‘Green New Deal’ Future” Tucker Carlson, Fox News: “There is an energy shortage in Europe. Cheap energy is essential. It is the key to everything that a normal society strives for: prosperity, safety, a longer life expectancy for its citizens. Everything depends on cheap energy, but Europe no longer has it and as a result, things are falling apart very quickly. … So, it turns out if you don't have cheap natural gas, you can't run the continent. Now, if you've got a graduate degree and live in a city in the United States, you may be shocked to learn this, you may never have heard this before, you may have believed that fossil fuels were on their way out any day now. Green energy cannot replace fossil fuels. Not now, not anytime soon. Fossil fuels remain what they have always been: the key to civilization.”

“Germany is committing national suicide” Ralph Schoellhammer, Spiked: “Germany is staring into the abyss thanks to the energy crisis. German heavy industry may even have to cut back on production in order to cope with soaring energy costs. … Russia’s ongoing gas squeeze has also affected Germany’s food production. As it stands, 70 per cent of Europe’s fertiliser production, which depends on gas, has been halted. This could seriously hinder agricultural output in 2023, and lead to massive shortages in food provision. Yet Germany’s political leaders seem to be putting their commitment to green orthodoxy above all else – including the need to tackle the multiple crises Germany now faces. … None of this should surprise us. Time and again, the German elites have stood in the way of the progress necessary for human flourishing, limiting the development of food and energy production. … It is tempting to ask, what is more dangerous right now – climate change or the destructive, unscientific and ideological policies enacted in its name?”

Cold, Tired, and Angry: What Europeans Expect This Winter

Polling data shows Europeans are worried the energy crisis will result in civil unrest and protests, as well as strikes. A majority of respondents in Poland (75%), France (69%), Germany (64%), and the UK (57%) say they anticipate “social unrest” in the coming months.

Meanwhile, at least 50% of those surveyed in all four countries expect they will be forced to cut back on home heating due to high prices (YouGov/More in Common).

Marilyn's Skirt, Don't Eat Here, Boston Massacre Defense

On September 15, 1954, the famous picture of Marilyn Monroe, laughing as her skirt is blown up by the blast from a subway vent, was shot during the filming of The Seven Year Itch. The scene infuriated her husband, Joe DiMaggio, who felt it was exhibitionist, and the couple divorced shortly afterward.
