CLIMATE
Weather Watchers
You may have missed it, but last week, hundreds of financial leaders, activists, and elected officials met in Paris to address the effects of climate change. Specifically, the summit centers around making sure the world’s monetary system can function as the planet’s climate changes — including a potential overhaul of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank, the world’s development banks.

From The Flag: This follows the Paris Climate Accords, drafted in 2015, which sought to address climate change in terms of adaptation, mitigation, and finance. This will add further fuel to the debate over things like ESG investing — in which funds prioritize things like addressing climate change. Here’s commentary from both sides.
LEFT-LEANING SENTIMENT
Desperate Times with Temperatures, Mosquitoes, and Protests on the Rise
If the world doesn’t stop producing planet-warming pollution, extreme weather events will only get worse.
Mosquitoes, and the public health risk associated with the diseases they carry, are another climate change problem officials must confront.
How can we condemn acts of protest such as throwing paint on art when their premise is sound, and their cause is so righteous?
Without climate change, these extreme weather events would not have happened Rachel Ramirez, CNN: "Droughts, storms, wildfires and heat waves... (all) becoming more intense and more frequent. The toll is huge and mounting, with lives lost, homes destroyed, livelihoods stolen and economies upended. The extreme events are happening against the backdrop of a very fast-warming climate. The world is already 1.2 degrees Celsius warmer than it was in preindustrial times, and the next five years are predicted to be the hottest on record. People often want to know if an extreme weather event happened because of climate change, said Friederike Otto, climate scientist... 'You can’t answer this with yes or no,' she told journalists... because climate change alters the likelihood and intensity of extreme events, she said. ... (studies show) the realities of the direct and immediate damage the climate crisis is doing to people’s lives, which scientists say will only get worse if the world continues to pump out planet-warming pollution."
Mosquito days are getting worse due to climate change Alex Fitzpatrick, Axios: "The number of 'mosquito days' — that is, those with the hot and humid weather the flying insects crave — has increased in many US cities over the past several decades, per a new analysis. The report, from nonprofit climate science research organization Climate Central, defines a "mosquito day" as one with average relative humidity of 42% or higher, plus daily temperatures of 50°–95° F. Why it matters: Mosquitoes are more than just a nuisance — they're a public health threat, carrying diseases such as malaria, West Nile, Zika and more. ... What's next: Experimental efforts to control mosquito populations by releasing genetically modified versions of the insects into the wild are underway in Florida and elsewhere... The bottom line: Mosquitoes — and the diseases they sometimes carry — are shaping up as one more climate change-induced problem for many local officials to worry about."

Should We Trust to the Traumatized Kids, or Give Dissenting Voices a Listen?
Not all scientists agree that a climate disaster is impending, and dissenting voices are worth listening to.
Data shows over half of all teenagers surveyed on the subject believe the world “may end in their lifetime.”
Greta Thunberg’s doomsday prediction has come and gone: she deleted the tweet, but it’s a propaganda trend that continues.
Can the Climate Heal Itself? Andy Kessler, Wall Street Journal Opinion: "Stop with all the existential-crisis talk. President Biden said, 'Climate change is literally an existential threat to our nation and to the world.' ... But what if the entire premise is wrong? What if the Earth is self-healing? Before you hurl the 'climate denier' invective at me, let’s think this through. Earth has been around for 4.5 billion years—living organisms for 3.7 billion. Surely, an enlightened engineer might think, the planet’s creator built in a mechanism to regulate heat, or we wouldn’t still be here to worry about it. The theory of climate change is that excess carbon dioxide and methane trap the sun’s radiation in the atmosphere... warming the planet. Pretty simple. ... But nothing is simple. ... Clouds, which can block the sun or trap its radiation, are rarely mentioned in climate talk. Why? Because clouds are notoriously difficult to model in climate simulations."
Schools are scaring our kids to death with this indoctrination program Stephen Moore, Fox News Op-ed: "As nearly every standardized test is showing, our schools are doing an abysmal job teaching kids how to read or do math. In some cases, kids graduating from high school can barely read their diplomas. But the schools are wildly succeeding with their climate change indoctrination program. When I speak to kids on high school and college campuses and ask what the greatest threat is to their generation, the answer isn't China's aggression. It isn't a drug abuse problem that is becoming the leading killer of our children. It isn't the failed schools or the corrupt government or the more routine violations of freedom of speech. It isn't the $32 trillion national debt soon headed to $50 trillion. ... No, they almost all raise their hands and moan that they are most worried about global warming or 'climate change.' We are raising a generation with millions of Greta Thunbergs."

Is Climate Change To Be Blamed on Humans?
Polling conducted last month indicates just under half (49%) of all Americans “believe climate change is mostly caused by human activity,” which is unchanged from 2017 and 2018.
But not everyone is convinced, with 27% saying it is “mostly caused by natural patterns,” and 7% of the belief “it is not happening at all.”
Broken out along party lines, 46% of Republicans see climate change as attributable to natural patterns, while just 13% of Democrats agree (Ipsos).
