Vance's Dynamic Dialogue
Today’s Top Story in One Sentence: Senator J.D. Vance (R-OH) accepted the Republican vice presidential nomination and gave a speech at the Republican National Convention on Wednesday.
Reporting from the Right: Vance goes on charm offensive with VP acceptance speech at RNC (Washington Examiner)
Reporting from the Left: JD Vance introduces himself as Trump’s running mate and makes direct appeal to his native Rust Belt (AP)
RIGHT-LEANING SENTIMENT
Man of the People
The Top Argument From The Right: J.D. Vance Appeals To The ‘Cast Aside And Forgotten’ In RNC Speech, M.D. Kittle, The Federalist: “The man who would be vice president formally introduced himself to a jubilant Republican National Convention on Wednesday evening in Wisconsin — and to voters nationwide. And he had a very compelling story to tell. … By many measures, Vance is the epitome of the American Dream. He grew up in poverty, a “family tradition” in rust-belt Middletown, Ohio, and in the Appalachian region of eastern Kentucky. The son of a drug-addicted mother and a father who left him, Vance, as they say, rose above his circumstances. He went to college on the G.I. Bill after serving in the Marines and the Iraq War. He earned his law degree from Yale and made a very comfortable living in venture capital. Vance’s bleak memoir was made into a movie in 2020, a couple of years before his successful Senate run. ‘Never in my wildest imagination could I have believed that I would be standing here tonight,’ Vance told the thousands of conventiongoers assembled at Milwaukee’s Fiserv Forum and the millions more watching across the country.”

LEFT-LEANING SENTIMENT
Trump’s Apprentice
The Top Argument From The Left: J.D. Vance Becomes Trump’s New Apprentice, James Poniewozik, The New York Times: “When it came to introducing himself, Mr. Vance had a head start and a challenge. He was telling a story he had already told, in the memoir ‘Hillbilly Elegy,’ and so had Ron Howard, in the 2020 film adaptation. But that story was in some ways not fitted to this audience. His book made the case that poor Appalachians — part of the rural base of the Trumpist G.O.P. — were often at fault for their own problems of unemployment and addiction and that they told themselves ‘lies’ to blame their woes on outsiders. Wednesday, the author gave that story a bit of a rewrite. He depicted his hometown, Middletown, Ohio, as having been ‘cast aside and forgotten by America’s ruling class,’ who Mr. Vance said had shipped jobs away and let fentanyl stream in. In this remake, President Biden was the villain, the elites’ longtime capo. …Mr. Vance served as an avatar of a kind of rural American life that his party celebrates as especially authentic. … There would be time for other aspects of policy, on the campaign trail and if Mr. Vance won the vice presidency. Wednesday night’s introduction was about bringing J.D. Vance into the family, which, in the Trump operation, is all part of the apprenticeship.”
Honorable Mention #1: J.D. Vance’s Populist Pitch, Eric Coretllessa, Time.
Honorable Mention #2:Did Vance sell a new kind of conservative nationalism? Jason Willick, The Washington Post.

Vance v. Harris
Recent YouGov poll results reveal that Vice President Kamala Harris is significantly more popular than Vance. Harris, recognized by 94% of respondents, holds a 49% popularity rating, while Vance, known by only 63%, has a 28% popularity rating. The data indicates that although many Americans are undecided about Vance, Harris clearly leads in both recognition and favorability. (Newsweek)
