Trump Turns Up the Rhetoric
Today’s Top Story: During weekend speeches, former President Donald Trump escalated his rhetoric, promoting police violence to deter crime, spreading false claims about California laws, and insulting President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris with derogatory comments.

Reporting from the Left: Trump turns to darker rhetoric as voting begins (NPR)
RIGHT-LEANING SENTIMENT
This Tactic is a Gamble
The Top Argument From The Right: Trump Amps Up Rhetoric to Keep Immigration at Center of Election, Natalie Andrews and Michelle Hackman, The Wall Street Journal: “In the final weeks of the election, Donald Trump and JD Vance are blaming a broad array of the nation’s ills on immigrants, betting that doing so will help them win over voters angry about the uptick in illegal border crossings that has dogged President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris for much of their term. The Republican presidential nominee and former president has long held sealing the southern border as his signature issue, but he is now drawing a direct line from immigration to more of society’s ills than ever, casting himself as the only one who can fix it. Trump and Vance, his running mate and the junior senator from Ohio, have alleged migrants are to blame for unaffordable home prices, high unemployment, infectious diseases, rising car insurance, unsafe elections and, perhaps most infamously, missing house pets. … The tactic is a gamble for Trump as he tries to motivate voters to go to the polls. It is an issue where the former president has high credibility with voters, but strategists said some of the more fiery rhetoric could alienate independents if Trump takes it too far.”

LEFT-LEANING SENTIMENT
We Shouldn’t Dismiss This
The Top Argument From The Left: Why it matters that Trump now wants to prosecute Harris, too, Steve Benen, MSNBC: “While all of this is wildly at odds with how American politics is supposed to work, especially at the national level, the speed and volume of Trump’s prosecutorial offensive might make it seem irrelevant, if not a little silly. Indeed, at first blush, we appear to be dealing with a White House hopeful who makes new calls for criminal charges against assorted foes on a nearly daily basis. But it would be a mistake to simply shrug off the former president’s weird rhetoric as background noise — because as The Wall Street Journal reported over the weekend, Trump and his team have ambitious plans for federal law enforcement. It’s not exactly a secret that Trump, during his White House tenure, went to scandalous lengths to weaponize the Justice Department, launching desperate attempts in the hopes of getting federal prosecutors to file charges against people he didn’t like. But there’s every reason to believe a second Trump term would be vastly worse, in large because he and his team now know how and why their weaponization efforts fell short the first time.
Honorable Mention #1: Dark Trump: Former president calls Harris “mentally disabled”, Mike Allen, Axios.
Honorable Mention #2: Trump, using extreme rhetoric, calls Harris 'mentally impaired' and says she should be 'prosecuted', Jake Traylor and Megan Lebowitz, NBC News.
FLAG THIS
Risk of Violence
Recent polling from CNN found that among registered voters, 77% believe that the tone of America’s political debate is encouraging violence. More voters expect violence to worsen if Trump is elected (57%) compared to Harris (42%), and Democrats are significantly more likely to say violence will escalate if Trump wins (86%) than Republicans are to say the same about Harris (65%) (CNN).
