TRUMP

Trump Praises Hitler’s Ways?

Today’s Top Story: Last Tuesday, in an interview with the Atlantic, Retired Gen. John Kelly said former President Trump asked him why he can't be like Hitler's generals. Kelly also claimed Trump once said, "Hitler did some good things" and praised Hitler for having "rebuilt the economy." The Trump campaign has denied the claims.

LEFT-LEANING SENTIMENT

Defending the Indefensible

The Top Argument From The Left: Not Even Fox News Can Defend Trump’s Latest Hitler Comments, Edith Holmsted, USA Today: “Fox News’s Brian Kilmeade may have pulled a muscle while bending over backward to justify Donald Trump’s request for loyal, Nazi-like generals. … On Fox & Friends Wednesday morning, Kilmeade tried desperately to make it OK. He argued Trump was simply trying to express a desire to be obeyed. ‘Play this out: If your general, who’s your chief of staff and your secretary of defense, is not doing what you say on an everyday basis, I could see him going, ‘I’d love generals that listened, that would be great,’’ Kilmeade said, according to The Daily Beast. Kilmeade claimed that Kelly and former Secretary of Defense James Mattis, both retired generals, ‘didn’t like the president’ and worked to ensure that many of Trump’s requests ‘never got done.’ Kilmeade also tried to argue that Trump was predisposed toward fascism because of his experience getting his way in the business world. … Kilmeade argued that Trump was not aware that German generals unquestioningly carrying out orders to commit mass slaughter for Nazi leader Adolf Hitler were, in fact, Nazis. Instead, Kilmeade suggested it was all hyperbolic… “

RIGHT-LEANING SENTIMENT

Left Is Playing the “Hitler Card”

The Top Argument From The Right: When all else fails, call him Hitler, Jeremiah Poff, Washington Examiner: “The manufactured “joy” proclaimed by the Democratic Party upon the coronation of Vice President Kamala Harris as the party’s nominee has been replaced by a desperation no more exemplified than by the latest push to declare former President Donald Trump to be another Adolf Hitler. During a town hall on CNN on Wednesday, Harris publicly embraced the Democratic Party’s go-to attack for Republican presidential candidates that goes back decades, telling CNN’s Anderson Cooper that she, in fact, believes that Trump is a fascist. … The Democratic Party has been calling Trump some variation of a fascist for years, whether it is calling him a “threat to democracy” or warning of a doomsday authoritarianism if he returns to the White House. But since President Joe Biden abandoned his reelection bid amid historically bad poll numbers, the party and Harris have spent the majority of the campaign attempting to manufacture a narrative of ‘joy’ while using abortion policy as the primary driver of the campaign’s messaging. … So, what do Harris and the Democratic Party do when they run out of options to defeat Trump? Fall back on old habits and declare him to be Hitler, just like they’ve done with practically every Republican presidential nominee.”

FLAG THIS

“Dictator for a Day”

Earlier in the year, a new University of Massachusetts Amherst and YouGov survey found that 74% of Republican voters thought it would be a good idea for former President Trump to act as a "dictator for a day" if he wins the election, while 26% disagree. Independent voters were more split, with 36% supporting the idea and 65% opposing it. Among Democrats, only 13% believe Trump’s "day one dictatorship" would be positive, compared to 87% who think it would be harmful.

Trump has previously stated he would only act as a dictator on his first day back in office, pledging to take actions like closing the border and intensifying drilling efforts (The Hill).
