Time for Fein to Resign?
Last Friday, more than 60 progressive grassroots groups called for Senator Diane Feinstein to step down due to concerns about her age and ability to perform her job. Feinstein has been in the Senate for almost three decades and is the oldest member at 89 years old.
Reporting from The Left: Why Some Democrats Want Feinstein To Resign Immediately Li Zhou, Vox
Reporting from The Right: Fellow Democrats turn on Dianne Feinstein, call for her to resign from Senate: 'dereliction of duty' Brandon Gillespie, Fox News
From The Flag: Senator Feinstein's absence is most notable on the Senate Judiciary Committee, for eliminating the committees' Democratic majority, evening the balance to a 10-10 Democrat-Republican split. Evidently, the increasing calls for Feinstein to resign are highlighting the complex dynamics of age and gender as it relates to an individual's ability to serve as a representative. Here's more from both sides.
LEFT-LEANING SENTIMENT
Mixed: "Leave Her Alone" vs. "She's Gotta Go"
The calls for Feinstein to resign from Democrats are disappointing and nothing more than thinly-veiled ageism and sexism.
Feinstein's absence from the Senate is creating a difficult situation for Democrats in the Senate Judiciary committee.
When youâre no longer capable of doing your extremely important job, you should step away from your extremely important job
Leave Dianne Feinstein Alone Eric Levitz, New York Magazine: â...Since Feinstein is a member of [the Senate Judiciary] committee and currently on medical leave due to shingles, the party doesnât have the votes to approve progressive judges. Therefore, it is actually pro-woman to tell a feminist trailblazer that she needs to give up her job. If those last few sentences are glowing, thatâs because theyâre chock full of gaslighting. And ageism. And male fragility. And white-supremacy culture. It might sound like these dudebros (and broettes) are genuinely concerned that a senile, 89-year-old multimillionaire is putting her vestigial thirst for power above the interests of Democratic constituencies in general, and women in particular, in much the same way that a certain Supreme Court justice did a few years ago. And they may sound earnestly worried that liberals who see politicians as idols rather than tools might fall prey to apologetics for narcissism dressed up as identity politics.â
Under Pressure Jim Newell, Slate: "[Senator Feinstein] had authorized Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer to temporarily replace her on Judiciary Committee. Schumer said he would âaskâ the Senate the following week. Senators, generally, donât like to mess with each otherâs committee assignments. Committee assignments do have to be approved by the full Senate, but theyâre usually done so, via unanimous consent, in about five seconds. ⌠But not even a single Republican on Monday said they would go along with Schumerâs âask.â The first two Republican senators to say they would block the move were two conservatives on the Judiciary Committee, Sens. Tom Cotton and Marsha Blackburn. Par for the course. But when North Carolina Sen. Thom Tillisâwho would likely be one of the 10 Republican senators Democrats would need to break a filibuster on swapping out Feinsteinâannounced he wouldnât go along, it was obvious Republicansâ hostility to the move was more widespread."

RIGHT-LEANING SENTIMENT
Democratic Hypocrisy and Double Standards
Democrats' are only now calling for Feinstein to resign because of the political implications, whereas they were happy to endorse her when it suited them.
The push to force the California senatorâs resignation is hypocritical and raises questions about what will happen in a Biden second term.
Both sides of the aisle need to contend with the fact that there senators of advanced age or who are impaired and not being completely honest about their conditions.
Democrats Discover the Age Issue Kimberley A. Strassel, Wall Street Journal Opinion: "Plenty of senators have faced injury and illness before, some absent for long periods. But with a 51-49 Senate marginâand the potential for a judicial pileup or the loss of a crucial floor voteâDemocrats have suddenly decided octogenarians pose a problem. Yet as ugly as the pressure campaign might be, the wonder is that Democrats didnât act to avoid this situation at the obvious time. As Ms. Feinstein debated re-election in 2017 she was, at 84, already the oldest senator and already showing decline. Yet the California political firmament rallied with endorsements and rolled over a primary challenger backed by the California Democratic Party. âŚ. One smart move in todayâs crazy political environment is to assume anything is possible, including the worst. All the more so when there are already blaring signs of a problem to come. Democrats might view the Feinstein moment as a warning of the danger they are courtingâŚâ
Feinstein, Fetterman, And Biden Illustrate Democratsâ Double Standard On Mental Acuity Jonathan Tobin, The Federalist: "But while Democrats are quick to slam as bigots anyone who had the temerity to notice Senator John Fettermanâs problems, they are not feeling quite so generous about another member of their Senate caucus. The double standard creates an ominous precedent that ought to hang over the 2024 presidential election. While theyâve been circling the wagons around Fetterman, Democrats have been pressuring Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., to resign due to the perception that she lacks the physical energy or the mental acuity to do her job. ⌠Yet whether you think Democratsâ decision to get rid of someone who canât do her job is sensible or insensitive and nasty, it does raise questions about the same standard not being applied to Fetterman and most especially to Biden. ⌠Democrats appear to be serious about asking the American people to re-elect an already diminished man who will be 82 in January 2025 and presumably serve until heâs 86."

Majority Believe Feinstein Should Resign
Following Senator Feinstein's hospitalization, a poll found 65% of Americans, including 64% of Democrats, said Feinstein should resign due to her month-plus absence.
78% of Americans who do not have a favorable view of Feinstein said she should resign. However, 64% who have a favorable opinion of the California senator came to the same conclusion.
Twice as many Americans â 41% â believe that old age hurts members of Congress by making their work âmore difficultâ rather than help them with âwisdom and experienceâ (Economist/YouGov).

Andropov's Letter, What is Ranch?, Messi's Napkin
On April 25, 1983, the Soviet Union releases a letter that Russian leader Yuri Andropov wrote to Samantha Smith, an American fifth-grader from Manchester, Maine, inviting her to visit his country. Andropovâs letter came in response to a note Smith had sent him in December 1982, asking if the Soviets were planning to start a nuclear war. At the time, the United States and Soviet Union were Cold War enemies.
