SCHOOL SHOOTING
Shooting in Madison
Todayâs Top Story: A school shooting at Abundant Life Christian School in Madison, Wisconsin, left two dead, six injured, and the teenage shooter, 15-year-old Natalie Rupnow, dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot, as police search for a motive and details on how she obtained the weapon.

RIGHT-LEANING SENTIMENT
Combination of Factors
The Top Argument From The Right: Wisconsin Christian school shooterâs motive was âa combination of factorsâ, Emily Hallas, Washington Examiner: âWisconsin authorities offered limited insight into the motivation behind Natalie Rupnowâs murderous rampage at Abundant Life Christian School. Rupnow shot and killed a teacher and fellow student Monday at the Wisconsin school. The 15-year-old shooter injured six others before fatally shooting herself. Two of those injured remain in critical condition. Noting that there are âalways signs of a school shooting before it occurred,â Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes said Tuesday that authorities are still looking into Rupnowâs online activity leading up to the incident and are trying to determine whether she was bullied. âIdentifying a motive is our top priority, but at this time, it appears that the motive is a combination of factors,â Barnes concluded. The chief did indicate that Rupnow did not appear to specifically target anyone at the school. âEveryone was put in equal danger,â he said. Barnes also addressed an online document that may have been written by Rupnow that is circulating online. If authentic, the document could provide critical insight into her motivation. Titled âWar Against Humanity,â the text states the author had âgrown to hate people and societyâ and called their parents âscum.ââ

LEFT-LEANING SENTIMENT
This is Who We Are
The Top Argument From The Left: After another school shooting, letâs face the facts. This is who we are., Mike Littwin, Colorado Sun: âI donât expect this latest school shooting in Madison, Wisconsin, to make much difference, except to those personally traumatized by it, to those who live in the affected community and to those of us who just canât accept what amounts to our nationâs chronic indifference to chronic gun violence. Most people, being human, were certainly saddened to hear of the school shooting, and yet indifference, even more sadly, is the constant sum of our reaction to children lying dead in their schools. âI think we can all agree that enough is enough,â Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes said Monday in a news briefing on the shooting. But, in truth, we donât all agree. If we all agreed, enough would be enough. But there is not enough in America. There arenât enough guns. There arenât enough gun-related deaths, including homicides and suicides. There arenât enough mass shootings. There arenât enough school shootings. It doesnât even seem to matter â not enough, anyway â that gun violence is the primary cause of death for children under the age of 18. ⊠We have decided this is who we are. âŠwe pretend that mental health is the real issue with gun violence and not the limitless proliferation of guns and the easy access that even teenagers have to those guns.â

School Shootings in 2024
Two major sources track U.S. school shootings but use different criteria, leading to significant discrepancies:
The K-12 School Shooting Database includes any incident involving a gun on school property, counting 325 shootings in 2024 so far and 346 in 2023.
EducationWeek uses stricter criteria, recording 39 shootings in 2024 and 37 in 2023.

On this day in 1776, Thomas Paine published the essay "The American Crisis," a shot in the arm to Patriots during a particularly difficult stretch of the American Revolution. In it, he wrote: "These are the times that try menâs souls; the summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of his country; but he that stands it now deserves the love and thanks of man and woman. Tyranny, like hell, is not easily conquered; yet we have this consolation with us, that the harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph."
