LEFT-LEANING SENTIMENT

We Must Take Action Now

The Top Argument From The Left: Kemp is wrong. This is the time to talk policy. Eugene Robinson, The Washington Post: “Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp stood before television cameras Wednesday night and said the cowardly words we always hear from Republican officials in such moments. Hours after two students and two teachers had been killed in a school shooting, allegedly committed by a 14-year-old boy with an AR-15-style semiautomatic weapon, Kemp declared: ‘Today is not the day for politics or policy.’ Really? Then what might work better for the governor’s busy schedule? Actually, his record makes it clear what date he has in mind for that discussion: Never. …popular, common-sense gun laws might have prevented this tragedy. And this is precisely the moment when we should be debating and implementing those policies — before some other American community joins the mournful list… How did an adolescent boy get his hands on a weapon based on a design for U.S. soldiers to use in combat? The FBI said sheriff’s deputies interviewed Gray and his father last year, when the boy was only 13, to follow up on anonymous online tips about threats of a school shooting. The father said that there were hunting guns in the house, according to the FBI, but that his son did not have unsupervised access to them. No action was taken.”

RIGHT-LEANING SENTIMENT

Shooter and Father Arrested and Charged

The Top Argument From The Right: Georgia school shooting suspect’s father arrested and charged, Emily Hallas, Washington Examiner: “The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has arrested the father of the suspect charged with murdering four people during a shooting at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia. The GBI on Thursday announced it had detained Colin Gray in connection to the shooting that shook Barrow County this week. Gray’s 14-year-old son, Colt, who was a student at the school, is suspected of opening fire on his campus on Wednesday, leaving two fellow students and two teachers dead. The GBI charged Colin Gray with four counts of involuntary manslaughter, two counts of second-degree murder, and eight counts of cruelty to children, according to a statement from investigators. The charges stem from Colin Gray knowingly allowing his son to possess a weapon, according to GBI Director Chris Hosey. Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith said the nine others injured in the shooting will make a full recovery.”

Voters Favor Gun Control Measures

A Fox News poll from last year revealed strong public support for several gun control measures. The most popular proposals include requiring criminal background checks for all gun buyers (87%), improving enforcement of existing gun laws (81%), raising the minimum age to buy a gun to 21 (81%), and mandating mental health checks for buyers (80%). Additionally, 77% support a 30-day waiting period for gun purchases, 61% back a ban on assault rifles, and while 45% favor more citizens carrying guns for defense, 52% oppose it (Fox News).

According to Everytown, there have been 6 firearm incidents on Georgia campuses in 2024 as of August 26, with Apalachee being the 7th. Since 2013, Georgia has seen 88 such incidents, resulting in 18 deaths and over 60 injuries. Nationally, in 2024 alone, there were at least 139 school-related gunfire incidents, leading to 42 deaths and 91 injuries (Athens Banner-Herald).
