September Wave
The White House has announced that interest charges will resume on federal student loan balances beginning September 1, after being on hold due to the pandemic. Earlier this month, President Biden vetoed a bill that would have ended his bid to cancel student loan debt.
Reporting from The Left: Student loan payments will be due starting in October, Department of Education clarifies Katie Lobosco, CNN
Reporting from The Right: Federal student loan interest to resume in September, payments in October Timothy Nerozzi, FOXBusiness
From The Flag: The Supreme Court did not issue an opinion on Bidenâs student loan plan last week, and it remains unclear whether the plan to forgive $10,000 in debt will be approved. SCOTUS does have a conference Thursday and an opinion could be issued then. Hereâs more from both sides.
LEFT-LEANING SENTIMENT
Tick Tock Goes the Clock as the Debt Burden Keeps Burying Americans
Despite Conservative Democratsâ claims, blocking student debt relief goes against the needs of most American taxpayers.
Through weak policy and negotiation, Biden has helped derail his student loan relief plan â and time is running out to salvage it.
This is a racial justice issue: people of color are forced to borrow more money for education, while also facing workplace inequities.
Here Are the Three âLiberalâ Senators Who Helped Republicans Block Bidenâs Student Loan Relief âPrem Thakker, New Republic: "(Last month) the Senate voted to block President Joe Bidenâs student loan relief program. Senate Republicans were joined by Democrats Joe Manchin and Jon Tester and independent Kyrsten Sinema... (President Biden vetoed the measure) ... As a reminder, while these conservative Democrats pretend their votes are in line with 'everyday Americans,' their votes signify keeping the soul-crushing boot of wildly undue debt on the backs of 43 million people. That boot harms those individualsâ lives, as well as the lives of the millions of friends, family members, and neighbors who surround them. Estimates show that 87 percent of the relief from Bidenâs plan would go to individuals earning less than $75,000 a year, while none would go to those earning more than $125,000. Ninety-five percent of the total benefits would go to households making less than $150,000."
Biden Just Gave Up His Power To Help Student Debtors âJulia Rock, Lever News: "In one of a series of concessions to Republicans during the recent debt ceiling standoff, Biden must restart student loan payments by the end of this summer. That means more than 40 million Americans will be once again crushed by debt, but it also strips Biden of his best tool to defend his broader student debt cancellation program: delay. His order to cancel up to $20,000 in debt for federal borrowers is expected to be struck down by the Supreme Court any day now â making it an inopportune moment for Biden to relinquish his power to extend the payment pause. Democrats could have avoided this scenario. But they refused to get rid of the debt ceiling, an arbitrary limit on government borrowing, when they controlled the House and Senate during the first two years of Bidenâs term."

Student Loan Forgiveness: An Unfair, Unconstitutional Handout to the Affluent
President Biden has already admitted his legal basis for doing this is âquestionable,â and the move doesnât sit well with most Americans.
The presidentâs plan unfairly looks to transfer the burden from those who took out loans to those who didn't attend college.
A recent study shows âAmericaâs highest earners will reap nearly two thirds of the giveaway.â
Voting Down Bidenâs Student Loan Forgiveness âEditorial Board, Wall Street Journal: "With a wave of his hand last summer, Mr. Biden canceled $10,000 to $20,000 in debt for some 40 million borrowers, though he had earlier conceded it was 'pretty questionable' that he had the power to do so. Nancy Pelosi, then House Speaker, also said... 'it would take an act of Congress, not an executive order' ... Who cares about the law when an election is nigh? The White House claims it has sweeping authority to forgive student debt under an obscure 2003 law to help veterans, and this is the claim the High Court is judging. But Mr. Bidenâs transparent political goal was to buy the votes of young people who have student debt. While the write-down might have played well in Berkeley, Calif., it rankles most Americans who didnât go to college or who sacrificed to repay their loans."
Biden's student loan handout: Senate should just say no. Here's why âBill Cassidy and Chuck Grassley, Fox News Opinion: "It is important to note (Biden's) student debt 'forgiveness' plan does not actually forgive or cancel debt. It only transfers the burden from those who willingly chose to take out debt to attend college to those who chose not to go to college or already worked to pay off their loans. ... The CBO estimates this blanket debt transfer will cost $400 billion. Much of that will benefit wealthier families making up to $250,000 a year. Meanwhile, what about the man who skipped college but is paying off the loan on his work truck, or the woman who worked her way through school and is now struggling to pay off her mortgage under Bidenâs economy? Instead of debt relief, this administration will force them to pick up the bill. It is unfair that President Biden would punish them because their debts simply look different from those of his preferred class."

Close to Half Support Canceling Debt, 4 in 10 Opposed
Polling conducted last month gathered data from a ârepresentativeâ group of Americans, including an oversample of student loan borrowers.
Just under half (47%) of all respondents back the Biden student loan debt cancellation plan overall, with 41% opposed to it, and 12% undecided.
Close to a third (35%) say the Supreme Court should strike the plan down.
The vast majority (83%) of student loan borrowers back the debt cancellation. But 3 in 4 of respondents who support canceling the debt donât currently owe any money toward student loans (USA Today/Ipsos).
