The Schiff Censure

Last week, the House of Representatives voted to censure or formally express their disappointment in California Congressman Adam Schiff. This was in response to lies he advanced concerning the “Russian collusion” smear aimed at former President Trump and his administration.
Reporting from the Right: Schiff gloats on 'The View' about censure: 'I'm doing pretty damn well' Hanna Panreck, Fox News
Reporting from the Left: House votes to censure Democratic congressman who led Trump investigations Haley Talbot and Kristin Wilson, CNN
From The Flag: Schiff repeatedly claimed to have seen direct evidence Trump’s campaign had colluded with the Russians, but Special Counsel Robert Mueller determined nothing of the sort happened, calling those assertions by Schiff into question. It marks only the 25th such censure in history, but Schiff says it’s a “badge of honor.” Here’s more from both sides.
RIGHT-LEANING SENTIMENT
Shifty Schiff Peddled Lies for Years, With a Hat Tip To His Media Enablers
Congressman Schiff repeatedly claimed to have “seen evidence” of Russian collusion, despite that proving to be false.
Documents released over the past year as part of the “Twitter files” show Schiff deceived the public and deserved to be censured.
Censuring Schiff was actually the least Republicans could do — they ought to vote on expelling him from Congress outright.
Censured media darling Adam Schiff used liberal TV platforms to peddle 'collusion' claims for years Joseph A. Wulfsohn, Fox News: "On a party-line vote, Schiff was formally censured on Wednesday for 'misleading the American public' when he repeatedly claimed he had seen 'evidence' of collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia during the 2016 election. However, Special Counsel John Durham concluded last month that the original probe looking into alleged collusion, dubbed Crossfire Hurricane, was based on 'raw, unanalyzed and uncorroborated intelligence,' and the FBI was wrong in fast-tracking a full investigation... Throughout the Mueller probe that plagued the Trump presidency, TV networks rolled out the red carpet for Schiff, the top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee who had unprecedented access to the nation's top secrets, particularly when it comes to foreign adversaries. When he repeatedly claimed that he had seen 'evidence' of collusion, many in the media had reason to believe what he said was credible."
Adam Schiff, Disinformation Man Editorial Board, Wall Street Journal: “(House Speaker) McCarthy (has said) 'Adam Schiff openly lied to the American public.' That’s true. The most well documented example was in early 2018, in response to then Intelligence Chairman Devin Nunes’s effort to inform the public about the FBI’s abuse of the FISA warrant process as part of its Trump-Russia collusion probe. ... As news broke that Mr. Nunes had submitted his then-classified memo to Congress, Twitter exploded with the hashtag '#ReleaseTheMemo.' Mr. Schiff—still trying to block the memo’s release... publicly (claimed) this hashtag was driven by 'Russian bots and trolls'... The documents now show that Twitter executives promptly reported back to Democrats that it had not 'identified any significant activity connected to Russia.' ... Mr. Schiff has other deceptions in his record, including numerous false claims that he had secret evidence of Trump-Russia collusion. He never produced any, and neither did the Mueller report."

LEFT-LEANING SENTIMENT
A Gift To Schiff, Handed Over by Vengeful GOP
This censure is actually a boost to Schiff’s run for Senate, as he’s campaigned around the partisan enmity he’s aroused in Republicans.
It’s wrong to say Special Counsel Mueller’s report exonerated Trump, so this censuring of Schiff is wholly inappropriate.
House Republicans claim this move intends to hold Schiff accountable, but it’s actually about retribution and political payback.
House GOP's 'Sham' Censure a Gift to Schiff Ed Kilgore, New York Magazine: "Schiff is just the 25th House member ever to be censured. ... In the end, the politician most pleased with the censure may actually be none other than Adam Schiff. He already plans to leave the House at the end of his current term as he runs for the US Senate seat of Dianne Feinstein. In a complicated and expensive primary in which he faces progressive House colleagues Barbara Lee and Katie Porter, Schiff is widely perceived as more moderate than your average California Democrat. So even before being censured, Schiff was very much campaigning on the partisan enmity he had aroused as every Republican’s least favorite House Democrat. From that perspective, a formal censure is as good as it gets. ... At one point, former Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who has endorsed Schiff’s Senate bid, sat next to him in the House chamber. It was exactly the picture Schiff might have painted in his own imagination."
House Republicans censuring Adam Schiff says more about them than him Editorial Board, Washington Post: "Contrary to what many Trump supporters claim, the investigation by Robert S. Mueller III never exonerated Mr. Trump. Indeed, the special counsel’s report laid out significant evidence of obstruction of justice. It’s indisputable that Russia interfered in the 2016 election on Mr. Trump’s behalf. ... After 20 Republicans voted (earlier this month) with Democrats to table the censure resolution, Mr. Trump wrote on social media that he’d support primary challengers against them. (Mr. Schiff had spearheaded Mr. Trump’s first impeachment and played a leading role on the select committee that investigated the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection.) When the resolution came up again Wednesday, this time without a threat to fine Mr. Schiff $16 million, most of those Republicans capitulated. In so doing, they weakened the power of congressional censure as an official rebuke reserved for egregious conduct — and, in the process, made themselves appear to be the wrongdoers."

Schiff Seeks Senate Seat, Americans Say Russia Collusion Claims Were “False”
Congressman Schiff is running for the US Senate in California, seeking the seat that will be vacated by Senator Dianne Feinstein — who is retiring.
He’s currently neck-and-neck with former Rep. Katie Porter, with Schiff at 15% and porter at 14% in a recent poll (Emerson College).
Meanwhile, as per the Russian collusion allegations that got Schiff censured, a poll from last month shows 56% of Americans now consider it a “false story” (Harvard CAPS/Harris).
