A Texas sheriff is investigating whether Florida Governor Ron DeSantis committed a crime when he flew 50 migrants to Martha’s Vineyard last week. The move has put immigration along the nation’s southern border into focus and generated ongoing controversy.
Reporting from the Right: DeSantis rips into outrage over Martha's Vineyard flights: 'I didn't hear a peep' about Biden flights (Fox News)
Reporting from the Left: Civil rights group files first lawsuit against DeSantis over 'illegal' migrant flights (POLITICO)
From The Flag: DeSantis has vowed to continue transporting migrants to US “sanctuary cities” by using funds Florida lawmakers set aside for that purpose. Meanwhile, many on the left say the policy is immoral and illegal because it moves people without their consent. Here’s more from both sides.
LEFT-LEANING SENTIMENT
DeSantis’ Stunt Fails To Takeoff, and Consequences Are Coming
Governor DeSantis appears to have violated laws with his migrant flight to Martha’s Vineyard, and the AG should open an investigation.
DeSantis’ attempt at political grandstanding failed as the people of Martha’s Vineyard rallied together to help the arriving migrants.
This latest stunt proves there’s nothing Ron DeSantis won’t do for political gain, no matter how demeaning or despicable it is.
“Ron DeSantis should be prosecuted for his treatment of immigrants” Jeff Weaver, The Guardian Opinion: “Various news entities have described DeSantis as engaging in a ‘stunt’. That characterization is a troubling understatement of the gravity of DeSantis’s conduct. The truth is that DeSantis – apparently unconcerned about the immorality of his actions – and those conspiring with him appear to have acted criminally under Texas law. Title 5, section 20 of the Texas penal code defines the crime of unlawful restraint. Under the statute, a person is restrained if their movement is restricted without their consent by, among other means, moving the person from one place to another. … That’s not to say that DeSantis and other Republican governors have not violated a host of other state or federal laws by deceptively transporting migrants across the country. Some have called for Merrick Garland to open an investigation. The US attorney general should.”
“What the Martha’s Vineyard Stunt Says About the Trump Wannabes” Jamelle Bouie, New York Times Opinion: “Ron DeSantis, the Republican governor of Florida, likes to do stunts. It is a key part of how he’s built his reputation as a fighter for conservative causes — a reputation he hopes to ride to the White House. … The conceit of this dehumanizing bit of political theater was that the liberal denizens of Martha’s Vineyard would reject the migrants out of hypocrisy, thus proving that Democrats aren’t actually interested in welcoming immigrants into their communities. To DeSantis and his amen corner, asylum seekers are disposable, and they believe that liberals will want to dispose of them too. What happened, instead, was that residents of Martha’s Vineyard rallied to provide food, shelter, clothing and services. The asylum seekers are now on their way to Cape Cod, to receive further assistance. The stunt failed to make its intended point.”

RIGHT-LEANING SENTIMENT
DeSantis Scores a Political Point, but Our Border Policy Has No Winners
DeSantis accomplished what he wanted by dragging the immigration issue into the mainstream and exposing the left’s double standard.
As Republicans and Democrats both shout about hypocrisy it becomes increasingly clear our immigration system is hopelessly broken.
The left says DeSantis is treating human beings like cargo, but there’s been no such outcry when the White House flies migrants north.
“The limits of Ron DeSantis’ migrant stunt” Sean Collins, Spiked: “Ron DeSantis likes to go on the political offensive. The Republican governor of Florida did so again last week, when he arranged for 50 migrants, mostly Venezuelans, to be transported to Martha’s Vineyard. … To say the citizens of Martha’s Vineyard freaked out would be an understatement. They called the National Guard, declared the arrival of 50 people a ‘humanitarian crisis’ and within 24 hours had the migrants shipped out to a military base 32 miles away. … Yes, DeSantis’ ploy was a stunt, but that doesn’t mean it was not effective politics. One point of the stunt was to incite the liberal elite to overreact and draw attention to the issue of immigration. That certainly worked: CNN… rushed to Martha’s Vineyard, treating it like a national emergency. Beyond that, many will have picked up on the liberal hypocrisy that DeSantis sought to highlight.”
“A Sanctuary City Spectacle” Editorial Board, Wall Street Journal: “Mr. DeSantis denounced progressive hypocrisy on immigration in a speech on Thursday. ‘The minute even a small fraction of what those border towns deal with every day are brought to their front door, they all of a sudden go berserk.’ Mr. DeSantis isn’t known for understatement, but in this case ‘berserk’ may not quite capture it. This political moralizing is easier than actually doing something about the border. And, by the way, the federal government is also sending buses with migrants to northern cities, as New York’s Mayor Adams has acknowledged. … All of this underscores the bipartisan failure that is U.S. immigration policy. The US needs willing workers and some of the migrants are genuinely fleeing persecution. But the porous US asylum policy lets too many economic migrants enter the country and claim asylum, and so they continue to come by the hundreds of thousands from around the world.”

FLAG THIS
It All Started With Abbott
While Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has received most of the attention over the past week, Gov. Greg Abbott, R-Texas, is the one who initially started busing migrants to “sanctuary cities” around the nation. As noted, opponents have called the move a cruel political stunt. Abbott, however, argues the Biden administration is ignoring what he calls a crisis at the border.
Currently, voters in the Lone Star State back Abbott. The Texas Politics Project at the University of Texas released a poll last week showing that 52% of Texas voters support the busing of migrants, while 35% expressed opposition and 14% are unsure.
