NATO

Rejected

President Biden just completed a trip to Europe, which included the NATO summit in Lithuania — where Ukraine was not offered membership, amid its war with Russia. That said, US officials say Ukraine will be offered Nato membership at the conclusion of the war.

From The Flag: Ukraine’s potential membership in NATO has been a point of contention between Russia and the US for decades. Russian officials oppose the move given they neighbor Ukraine — which seeks NATO membership due to the associated security. Here’s more from both sides.

LEFT-LEANING SENTIMENT

After No on NATO, We Must Keep Supporting the Fight

  • President Biden must continue to help Ukraine and ultimately give Kyiv the security that will allow the country to rebuild.

  • We kid ourselves thinking we’ve sacrificed for Ukraine — it’s the other way around, and people in the Baltic countries know that.

  • Biden is correct to emphasize the need to assist Ukraine while also being cautious about the nation joining NATO.

Ukraine Needs a Future--It Needs Nato Timothy Garton Ash, The Guardian Opinion: "Unless the US gives bolder leadership on long-term security for Ukraine... historians may one day ask, 'Who lost Ukraine?' And their shocking answer might be: President Joe Biden. I say this after talking to a wide range of people in Kyiv... before departing Ukraine (on the) 500th day of the largest war in Europe since 1945. There’s still the extraordinary fighting spirit that I found on my last visit, in February. But in five months, some people seem to have aged five years. They are exhausted. The casualties, military and civilian, continue to mount. ... While the Biden administration worries at every single step about escalation, Vladimir Putin has continued to escalate – notably with the blowing-up of the Kakhovka dam, which has ruined vast tracts of Ukrainian land. ... In a recent poll, 78% of Ukrainians said close family members or friends had been wounded or killed since Russia’s full-scale invasion last year."

Ukraine Is Sacrificing For Us Nicholas Kristoff, New York Times Opinion: "Many Americans and Europeans flatter themselves... too often, we think we have sacrificed for the Ukrainians. We pat ourselves on the back for providing expensive weapons and paying higher heating bills to help Ukrainians win their freedom — and we wish they’d get on with it. ... it’s the other way around: The Ukrainians are sacrificing for us. They’re the ones doing us a favor, by degrading the Russian military and reducing the risk of a war in Europe that would cost the lives of our troops. ... We’re right to celebrate a successful NATO summit. But especially if Ukraine struggles to recover large swaths of territory in this counteroffensive, there’ll be feckless grumbling in Western capitals about the price we’re paying and the favors we’re doing Ukraine. Anyone tempted to think that way should listen to the Baltic leaders, because they’ve learned the hard way how best to manage unruly bears."

RIGHT-LEANING SENTIMENT

Admitting Ukraine To NATO Would Be Antagonistic

  • It’s no surprise that Ukrainian President Zelenksyy would push so hard for NATO membership, but it’s not realistic at this time.

  • Ukraine's potential entrance to NATO is a distraction and one of Russia's stated motivations for launching its war.

  • Zelenskyy’s argument for Ukraine’s NATO membership has two main weaknesses.

Ukraine Should Not Be Let in NATO Editors, National Review: "Zelensky is, quite naturally, pressing as hard as he can to secure the best security arrangements that he can for his embattled country. He will also be aware that there is no chance that Ukraine will join NATO in the foreseeable future. Acceptance requires unanimity, which Ukraine would not conceivably receive. Moreover, there is a strong convention that NATO will not accept a new member embroiled in a border dispute, let alone one already at war. There are very good reasons for that, not least the logic of NATO’s mutual-defense obligations. For NATO and Russian forces to be in direct confrontation would carry the risk of setting off a chain of events from which no one would be able to find an off-ramp. Understanding this, NATO has rightly agreed at the summit to extend an invitation to Ukraine at an unspecified time... "

Talk of NATO Membership for Ukraine Is Delusional Christopher Preble & James Siebens, The National Interest: "Optimistic assumptions about Russia’s tolerance for Ukraine moving into NATO have been definitively and tragically disproved in eastern Ukraine during the last sixteen months. More realistic expectations about Russia’s genuine hostility to the alliance’s enlargement have been borne out. Russia’s August 2008 invasion of Georgia, mere months after NATO’s declaration in Bucharest, was intended, as Michael Kofman explained, 'to teach the West a lesson about Russia’s ability to veto further NATO expansion eastward.' With respect to Ukraine, the direct warning signs were apparent at least since 2014, when Russia seized Crimea and initiated a proxy war in the Donbass region. Ukraine’s deepening cooperation with NATO since that year continues to be one of Russia’s stated motivations for the current conflict, and for its attempt to use coercive diplomacy against both NATO and Ukraine prior to its invasion."

FLAG THIS

More Than 8 in 10 Ukrainians Want To Join NATO

Polling data from January of this year indicates 86% of Ukrainians are in favor of joining NATO, a record high. Just 3% would vote against such a move, while 8% wouldn’t vote.

The same survey found 87% of respondents support Ukraine’s bid to join the European Union (Rating Group).

In May, a separate poll found 64% hold a favorable view of Ukraine, while 62% feel favorably toward NATO (Pew Research).

Storming the Bastille, Remarkable Treks, Basic Compass Skills

On This Day in 1789: Parisian revolutionaries and mutinous troops storm and dismantle the Bastille, a royal fortress and prison that had come to symbolize the tyranny of the Bourbon monarchs. This dramatic action signaled the beginning of the French Revolution, a decade of political turmoil and terror in which King Louis XVI was overthrown and tens of thousands of people, including the king and his wife Marie Antoinette, were executed.

Today I learned that John Doyle was attacked by a great white shark while surfing off the coast of West Africa. He made it back to shore, only to be mauled by lions on the way to the hospital. He survived both attacks and made a full recovery.
