TRUMP
“Radical Left Lunatics”
Today’s Top Story: On Sunday, former President Donald Trump said in a Fox News TV interview that in the event of Election Day upheaval from “radical left lunatics” the situation “should be very easily handled by” the U.S. military.

LEFT-LEANING SENTIMENT
Trump’s Fascistic Dream
The Top Argument From The Left: A military that quashes protest is a part of Donald Trump's fascistic dream, Frank Figliuzzi, MSNBC: “Trump could have said he hoped the election would be peaceful. He could have used that moment in the interview…to call for peace no matter the outcome. He could have even said he has no idea what far-left protesters might do if he wins or what his MAGA base would do if he loses. Instead, Trump chose to express a fascistic desire to use the military against his dissenters, or as he termed them, the ‘radical left lunatics.’ … While Trump won’t be in power on Nov. 5, his authoritarian fantasy of the military handling political dissent and his political adversaries is still a revelation of what could be in store for our country if he ever again becomes commander in chief. … While it’s no surprise anymore that Trump disdains the rule of law, using the military in a domestic law enforcement capacity violates America’s Posse Comitatus Act. And Trump’s love affair with the idea of deploying soldiers on a whim isn’t limited to quelling his dissenters. Trump wants to be surrounded by the most elite components of the military when it comes to his own personal security. He recently requested military support, including special forces members, as part of his protection detail.”

RIGHT-LEANING SENTIMENT
A Warning to the “Enemy Within”
The Top Argument From The Right: Trump doubts supporters will sow chaos on Election Day, claims military may be needed for ‘radical left lunatics’, Ryan King, New York Post: “Former President Donald Trump sought to turn the tables on concerns that his supporters may stoke chaos after the Nov. 5 election, countering that it’s the ‘radical left lunatics’ who might get out of control. Reflecting on the recently detained Afghan national who allegedly conspired to carry out an ISIS-inspired Election Day terror attack, Trump said he doesn’t expect Election Day chaos. … Scores of Democrats have openly fretted about a repeat of the Jan. 6, 2021 ransacking of the Capitol during the aftermath of Trump’s election loss. The Department of Homeland Security has designated Jan. 6, 2025, a National Special Security Event as a precaution. During another portion of the pre-taped interview, Trump contended that the ‘enemy from within, in my opinion, is more dangerous than China, Russia and all these countries.’ He cited Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) as an example, and specified that ‘I call him the enemy from within.’ Schiff served as an impeachment manager during Trump’s first impeachment and the former president has long seethed at the Golden State Democrat. Trump further stressed that a ‘smart’ president could defeat foreign adversaries ‘pretty easily,’ but claimed that the ‘enemy from within’ is much harder to fight.”
Honorable Mention #1: ‘The enemy from within’: Trump suggests using the military to protect the nation from ‘radical left lunatics’ protesting his election victory, Jamie McIntyre, Washington Examiner.

Fascism Fears vs. Values Concerns
Polling in May from NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist National poll revealed that 31% of Americans cite fears of rising fascism and extremism as their greatest concern for the future of the country. Notably, this sentiment is particularly pronounced among Democrats, with 47% identifying it as their primary worry, while only 15% of Republicans share the same fear. Among independents, 32% express concerns about extremism, following a lack of values at 24% and fears of the U.S. becoming a “weak” country at 23%. (NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist Poll)
