Today’s Top Story: Former President Donald Trump is gaining ground on Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential race, according to several national polls.

RIGHT-LEANING SENTIMENT
Walz to Blame
The Top Argument From The Right: Blundering Tim Walz dragging down Harris campaign — while brilliant JD Vance helps Trump surge, Miranda Devine, New York Post: “As the latest polls Sunday showed Donald Trump and Kamala Harris neck and neck with just 23 days to go until the presidential election, Democratic spinmeisters are trying to calm the bedwetters, and Barack Obama has been dispatched to scold black men for not being impressed by his protégé. But as uncomfortably close as this election is, one thing is certain: Tim Walz has to be the worst VP pick on record, in stark contrast to JD Vance. If Harris loses, her self-indulgent decision to reject popular Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro in favor of a running mate even dumber than she is will go down in the Democrats’ Hall of Fame as the worst own goal of all time. What the choice of running mate tells you about each candidate is profound. Trump’s choice of the brilliant Senator Vance tells you he is comfortable in his own skin, secure about his own achievements and not threatened by a younger, more articulate MAGA exemplar. Vance pulled himself out of a chaotic Appalachian childhood plagued by poverty, domestic violence and drug abuse to attend Yale Law School, find success in business and a happy marriage. Since he was unveiled as Trump’s surprise VP pick, against the advice of most donors and advisers, he has hit the ground running and proven his worth in dozens of interviews pushing back on media lies with grace and deadly precision.”

LEFT-LEANING SENTIMENT
Pressure on Harris
The Top Argument From The Left: Trump’s extreme vision for America hikes pressure on Harris, Stephen Collinson, CNN: “Donald Trump is invoking a vision of an extreme new White House term that would transform America and rock the world. And Vice President Kamala Harris has only three weeks to avert it, as she struggles to restore momentum in a neck-and-neck race to Election Day. … Trump’s deepening extremism is increasing already massive pressure on Harris. And a phalanx of senior Democratic leaders — including former Presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama — are pleading with voters in swing states, especially the Black and Latino voters Harris needs, not to let Trump return. … The close contest also suggests that despite Trump’s unapologetic extremism, Democrats have failed for the third election in a row to produce a candidate and a message that can give them any reassurance about the election result. While liberals and moderates might be horrified by the strongman leadership Trump proposes, he’s winning on what voters consistently say is the top election issue: the economy. … Harris’ task is complicated by the lack of opportunities to take on Trump directly. The former president, who has spent weeks lambasting her for avoiding the press, rarely strays from his comfort zone of conservative media and Fox News, where he enjoys adulation rather than cross-examination.”

Candidates in Deadlock
With just three weeks until Election Day, a national NBC News survey shows the presidential race is deadlocked, with both Trump and Harris holding 48% support. Harris experienced a drop in support from 49% last month, while Trump gained 4 percentage points, rising from 44% in September. Meanwhile, the number of undecided voters has decreased to 4%, down from 7% in the previous month's survey (The Hill).

Mata Hari, Radical Optimism, Chicken Candy
On This Day in 1917, Dancer, courtesan, and alleged spy Mata Hari is executed for espionage by a French firing squad at Vincennes outside of Paris. She first came to Paris in 1905 and found fame as a performer of Asian-inspired dances. She soon began touring all over Europe, telling the story of how she was born in a sacred Indian temple and taught ancient dances by a priestess who gave her the name Mata Hari, meaning “eye of the day” in Malay. In reality, Mata Hari was born in a small town in northern Holland in 1876, and her real name was Margaretha Geertruida Zelle.
Today I learned candy corn was originally called “Chicken Feed.”
