POLITICS

Monday at Mar-a-Lago

On Monday night former President Donald Trump disclosed Mar-a-Lago, his palatial home in Florida, had been raided by the FBI.

From The Flag: It’s not immediately clear what the government was looking for, although some reports link the raid to documents Trump took from the White House, which may be considered classified. Here’s the latest from both sides.

RIGHT-LEANING SENTIMENT

This Is Truly an Unprecedented and Historic Violation

  • Leftists in government and the media have cooperated to make America unrecognizable and more in line with a third world country.

  • In their desperate obsession to stop Trump from running again the left has violated the Constitution and flouted established norms.

  • The FBI is a politicized and corrupt agency that operates as a “secret police” similar to the Nazi Gestapo – and it must be abolished.

“Raid on Trump's Mar-a-Lago home by Biden's politicized FBI means US now a third world country” Matt Schlapp, Fox News Opinion: “The woke, socialist Left will stop at nothing to destroy our nation… It’s certainly hard to be optimistic when the challenges we face are so drastic. … We are witnessing the disintegration of the Left’s coalition in America. But as it breaks it is lurching more aggressively. It’s time for each American to stand for each other and rid this nation of this socialist reign of terror. President Biden’s politicized FBI just raided President Trump’s home in Mar-a-Lago. This nation is becoming unrecognizable. Biden has successfully transformed America into a third-world country. Carjackings in city centers and raids on opposition leaders – that’s something that used to be reserved for Caracas. Patriotic Americans understand the urgency of the moment. We need to organize and turnout in record numbers in the upcoming midterms.”

“Raid on President Trump's Florida home a wake-up call” Dex Bahr, American Thinker: “The Biden administration showed Monday that they really are the most anti-American, anti-Constitution presidency in this nation's history. The raid on President Trump's Florida home will go down in history as the day America realized that Marxism has infiltrated our federal government. Biden used his Justice Department as a weapon against a political opponent. Think about that for a moment. A sitting American president used the DOJ like the secret police to intimidate a political opponent. We're talking Third World tactics in American politics. … One thing is for sure: the left is scared to death of another Trump presidential run. Their desperate actions telegraph that they know he will win if he decides to announce. The left has thrown everything at President Trump from the fake Russia collusion scandal to the double-impeachments and now to an FBI raid. Nothing has worked.”

LEFT-LEANING SENTIMENT

No One Is Above The Law, Which Trump Is Learning Now

  • Attorney General Merrick Garland is rightfully pressing forward with the investigation of Trump, which should end in an indictment.

  • While the GOP rushes to discredit the FBI and its investigation as “politically motivated,” Trump seeks to avoid accountability.

  • The prosecution of Trump could result in his being barred from running for office ever again, though he may avoid jail time.

“Trump Search Should Just Be Garland’s Opening Act” Timothy L. O'Brien, Bloomberg Opinion: “It’s not entirely clear why the FBI targeted Mar-a-Lago. Trump, who was not there, predictably characterized the search as a Democratic hit job. But the feds were apparently searching for classified records Trump stashed in Palm Beach after leaving the White House. … Theft of government records is the least of Trump’s legal worries, however. Attorney General Merrick Garland appears to be finally bringing the full weight of federal law enforcement to bear on the former president. … Garland’s choices in the months ahead will have momentous consequences. His correct course of action would be to demonstrate that no president is above the law and indict Trump. As the Jan. 6 committee hearings have already demonstrated, Trump and his team were awash in crimes — including creating slates of false electors to be used in an attempt to overturn the 2020 presidential vote.”

“The Mar-a-Lago Raid Has Led to a Full-On GOP Meltdown” Dahlia Lithwick, Slate: “The immediate GOP response to Monday evening’s FBI search for documents at Mar-a-Lago is almost as revealing as the search warrant itself. Having witnessed the bulk of the party harden its commitment to protecting Trump at any cost after the January 6th attack on the Capitol, nobody should be shocked to learn that ranking Republicans—without any information about what was seized, or why—were willing to stake their political careers on the claim that it was a lawless, partisan ‘raid.’ The darkest versions of these claims called for doing away with federal law enforcement altogether. … But this will have collateral consequences. The chilling argument that former presidents are simply above the law, and that law enforcement exists only to take out the little people, is also laced throughout this critique. It’s textbook authoritarianism, sure, but it’s also a formula that has helped Trump elide accountability in the past.”

Nation Split on January 6 Indictments, Trump’s Eligibility

Concerning the events of January 6 in Washington, DC, 53% of Americans feel former President Trump should face indictment. That said, 54% say he should be allowed to run for office again.

Meanwhile, it’s unclear if Monday’s raid had anything to do with the storming of the Capitol. Poll director Mark Penn said indicting Trump over January 6 would be “an explosively divisive issue in the country” (Harvard CAPS-Harris).
