IMMIGRATION

Migrants To Martha’s

Image: Edgartown Lighthouse on Martha's Vineyard

The nation’s immigration policy is in focus as several Republican governors have been busing or flying migrants from southern states to northern locales. This has led to a political clash between those governors and local officials in places like New York City, Chicago, Washington DC, and most recently Martha’s Vineyard.

From The Flag: Governors Doug Ducey of Arizona, Greg Abbott of Texas, and Ron DeSantis of Florida have all transported migrants to various destinations saying their states are overwhelmed by unchecked illegal immigration. Many on the left decry this as a political stunt. Here’s the latest from both sides concerning our southern border and these developments.

RIGHT-LEANING SENTIMENT

Whatever Happened to Sanctuary? It Was All Talk, Apparently

  • Democratic leaders in several cities have called for federal funding as a result of this development, yet they refuse to demand that the southern border be secured.

  • For years Democrats have virtue signaled concerning the merits of sanctuary cities, but that’s all changed now that the costs and impact on constituents have proven unpopular.

  • The porous southern border – as encouraged by Biden – victimizes both immigrants and Americans, especially as fentanyl makes its way across.

“Sanctuary city Democrats’ laughable angst on illegal-migrant costs” Editorial Board, New York Post: “Democrats and media outlets are suddenly alarmed that illegal migrants are turning sanctuary cities like Washington, New York and Chicago into ‘unofficial border towns.’ Never mind the pain in actual border towns in Texas and Arizona since President Joe Biden opened the southern border — per Democrats’ wishes. … How rich. Suddenly, when cities that end-run federal law and claim to want more migrants get sent a few thousand of them, their leaders pop up, blast the states sending them and demand millions in federal aid. Yet millions of illegal border-crossers have swamped border communities for 20 months, with silence from Dems and left-leaning media. … Fix the actual problem, not the symptom. Dems who don’t want to embarrass the prez can do it behind the scenes, but tell the White House it’s got to truly secure the border — not just pretend.”

“Sanctuary Cities Seethe as Illegal Immigrants Actually Arrive” Charles Lipson, Newsweek Op-ed: “The surest sign that public policies are simply virtue signals is when the messages don't cost anything. … And for years it has been free for deep-blue cities to proclaim themselves ‘sanctuaries’ for illegal immigrants. That's changing now that voters want some sanctuary for themselves. … That is exactly what's happening in New York City and Washington D.C. now that Texas Governor Greg Abbott is sending those cities a few busloads of illegal immigrants from his state. … These progressive bastions were silent when the Biden administration flew planeloads of illegal immigrants to suburban airports in the middle of the night. … Now you can hear the politicians screech. These shrill noises are the sound of progressive politicians being squeezed. They proclaim their cities are ‘sanctuaries’ but—surprise, surprise—they don't actually want more illegal immigrants. Not that they can voice that reservation, of course, given their activist political base.”

LEFT-LEANING SENTIMENT

This Isn’t the Win GOP Thinks It Is, but It Does Highlight Need for Reform

  • While Republican governors likely thought this move was clever they’re actually helping disperse immigrants to cities where they can thrive and benefit the country.

  • While it’s fair to say the Biden administration has not done a good job along the southern border, it’s also true our nation’s immigration policies must be overhauled.

  • The busing of migrants by Governors Abbott and DeSantis amounts to political theater and mocks people seeking a better life.

“Busing migrants from the border is a blessing, not a punishment” Jeff Jacoby, Boston Globe Opinion: “The best solution to the illegal immigration crisis is to make legal immigration much easier. But in the interim, the Texas and Arizona governors’ stunt, however cynically intended, turns out to be an excellent idea. Government agencies, working with humanitarian organizations, ought to be encouraged to help migrants move onward from the overstressed border towns. It’s in everyone’s interest to make it easy for newcomers to disperse to communities nationwide — whether to connect with relatives or friends… or to move to cities where the labor market is tight and jobs are plentiful. … Abbott and Ducey may have thought they were pulling a fast one. But they outsmarted themselves. Enabling migrants to reach new destinations as quickly as possible is the best thing we can do for them and for us. Keep the buses rolling and the new Americans coming.”

“The US needs immigration, not overheated rhetoric on migrants” Editorial Board, Washington Post: “Two things are simultaneously true. First, the Biden administration has mishandled immigration messaging by telling migrants not to come even as it pressed for more humane — meaning relaxed — border policies. Second, without a more forward-looking immigration policy, one more closely aligned with labor-force demands in an economy starved for workers, the nation’s long-term economic growth prospects will be stunted. … Congress (should) overhaul the immigration system to allow for higher inflows of legal workers and a path to legalization for some of the estimated 10 million undocumented migrants, many of whom have been in this country for 15 years or more. … Republicans falsely equate immigrants with bringing higher crime, draining welfare programs, and smuggling fentanyl and other drugs. If immigration is forever wielded as a political cudgel, and not as a policy component of economic growth, everyone will suffer.”

Not Seeing Eye To Eye on Immigration, but Majority Says Border Is Being Invaded

Polling data released last week shows a deep partisan divide on many of the issues tied to immigration. For example, 79% of Republican voters prefer more deportations of illegal immigrants, while just 39% of Democrats agree with that sentiment.

Meanwhile over 9 in 10 Republicans want more border security, while just under 6 in 10 Democrats feel the same way (Pew Research).

In a separate poll conducted last month, 54% of respondents agreed the US is experiencing an “invasion” along its southern border — 76% of Republicans feel that’s true, compared to only 40% of Democrats (NPR/Ipsos).
