Liz's Loss

Earlier this week Wyoming Congresswoman Liz Cheney was defeated in the GOP primary, with challenger Harriet Hageman winning the right to be on the ballot in November. Hageman had been endorsed by former President Trump, as Cheney is vice chair of the January 6 committee and alleges Trump committed crimes in regard to that day’s events.

From The Flag: Cheney is now the fourth House Republican to lose their primary after voting to impeach Trump in 2021. Here’s the latest from both sides on her loss, the January 6 investigation, and what comes next.

RIGHT-LEANING SENTIMENT

Wyoming Voters See Right Through Cheney, and Kick Her to the Curb

  • Republican voters in Wyoming have fully rejected neocons like Cheney, as they consider her January 6 obsession deceitful.

  • Congresswoman Cheney has routinely exhibited disdain for regular Americans and always saw Wyoming as a means to an end.

  • Cheney’s self-righteous concession speech intimated that Wyoming Republicans are immoral and repugnant, unlike her.

“Liz Cheney’s neoconservatism is dead” Seth Barron, Unherd: “Liz Cheney’s thumping defeat in her bid for renomination for Wyoming’s sole seat in the House of Representatives signals again the utter and total defeat of the Bush-Cheney-Romney era of the Republican Party. The neoconservative period of GOP dominance ended when Donald Trump trounced the field during the 2016 primary season. … Reliably Trump-y until the January 6 riot at the Capitol, Representative Cheney about-faced to embrace every jot of the Democrats’ narrative regarding Trump’s alleged attempt to ignore the election results, dispense with the Constitution, and establish himself as a Caesar on the Potomac. Cheney relished the opportunity to sit before cameras and playact as the last patriotic Republican, a defender of the nation and its democratic values. Her performance on the January 6 committee was read by all members of her party — outside the province of certain op-ed writers whose primary audience is each other — as purest perfidy.”

“Liz Cheney Is No Martyr. Just Another Rich, Entitled Member Of The D.C. Establishment” Victoria Marshall, The Federalist: “Listening to the corporate media and the DC establishment, one would think Cheney is history’s greatest hero, a political martyr who put ‘principle over party,’ and who courageously stood up against Republican voters and their strong support of the party’s most recent president, support which Beltway insiders find unseemly. Such simplistic and error-ridden sound bites work well in DC, but not in the rest of America. … In fact, there’s nothing heroic about denying political enemies due process, or helping your constituents’ political opponents with their Stalinist show trials. Seething hatred of Trump is not a principle, or at least certainly not one worth defending at the expense of the republic and its health. She’s not the hero that her media fans claim her to be. She’s also not a martyr.”

LEFT-LEANING SENTIMENT

Cheney’s Loss Shows GOP’s Anti-MAGA Attempts Are Futile

  • The result of Wyoming’s GOP primary displays how challenging it will be for anti-Trump Republicans to make headway.

  • Cheney has demonstrated clear disgust for her party’s support of Trump, and it’s puzzling that other Republicans don’t feel similarly.

  • In her concession speech Cheney noted she could have easily won re-election but instead chose to fight against Trump’s lies.

“How Liz Cheney lost Wyoming's lone seat in the House” Eric Bradner and Jeff Zeleny, CNN: “Cheney's ouster caps a summer in which Trump has purged the GOP of many of his critics, while elevating candidates -- including Hageman -- who have parroted his lies about widespread election fraud. Trump-aligned candidates have won primaries for governor in swing states such as Arizona, Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania, and Senate in Georgia, Ohio and Pennsylvania. Candidates backed by the former President have positioned themselves to take over the election machinery in a series of key states if they win in November. Primaries in recent months have also brought into focus the role a handful of prominent Republicans, including Cheney and former Vice President Mike Pence, are seeking to play in moving the GOP beyond Trump and his election denialism. But Wyoming's results on Tuesday demonstrated the long odds those Trump critics face in a party in which the former President remains the most dominant figure.”

“Liz Cheney’s Kamikaze Campaign” Benjamin Wallace-Wells, The New Yorker: “Cheney’s family history is more intertwined with the Republican Party than that of just about any other active politician. The irony that she is now the most visible face of what is mostly a Democratic initiative isn’t lost on anyone. … For Cheney, this period of political life is not only about Trump; it is about the decisions that Republicans have made to defend him. … One supposed mystery about Cheney: If she is so horrified by Trump’s war on democracy, why did it take her until after the November, 2020, election to notice it? … The most important question about Cheney is this: Why did so few of her colleagues join her? … For half a decade, most of its elected members have been unable to publicly denounce a President who disgusts and scares many of them privately. How much can a congressional seat be worth to them?”
