Letitia’s Lawsuit

A lawsuit has been filed against former President Trump and his children by New York Attorney General Letitia James. She wants to ban the Trump Organization from doing business for five years, and force it to repay $250 million that the AG claims were illegally obtained.

From The Flag: Trump responded to the lawsuit, calling it “another witch hunt” and claiming AG James is a "racist" who’s acting with political intent. Meanwhile, the lawsuit comes amid an ongoing investigation into Trump’s alleged mishandling of classified documents. Previous newsletters covered the associated affidavit as well as the original search at Mar-a-Lago. Here’s more from both sides.

LEFT-LEANING SENTIMENT

Trump Can’t Lie His Way Out of Trouble This Time

  • AG James is showing a dogged determination to get justice by digging into and exposing Trump's vast web of lies.

  • Trump’s latest legal challenge underscores his political failures, including the fact GOP candidates he’s backed are struggling.

  • AG James’ lawsuit connects to the search at Mar-a-Lago because Trump overvalued his South Florida home much like his other assets.

“Let justice be done: Tish James rightly pursues Donald Trump and his company” Editorial Board, New York Daily News: “Trump lied about his wealth (he wasn’t as rich as he said he was) and his academic credentials (he wasn’t first in his class at Wharton). And as the whole world now knows, just about everything he uttered before, during and after his benighted presidency was also a lie. … James is on the side of truth, justice and the American way on this one. She has Trump nailed… The dirt was first spilled by Cohn’s wannabe successor, Michael Cohen, under very smart questioning by then-freshman Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on Feb. 27, 2019, in just her second month in office. Cohen said the boss had cheated when declaring the worth of his properties. … James has only the power to sue, and make referrals to federal prosecutors and the IRS. Godspeed.”

“New York’s lawsuit against Trump is yet further proof that he’s a loser” Jennifer Rubin, Washington Post Opinion: “The suit effectively points a dagger at the entire Trump operation, putting at risk the thing that he holds most dear: his wealth. James has also made a referral to the Internal Revenue Service and the U.S. attorney of the Southern District of New York. For months, swarms of mainstream media pundits… repeatedly declared that the investigation into Trump’s hoarding of documents was strengthening his grip on the party. … In fact, Trump’s standing with the GOP looks weaker than ever. … (His) primary endorsees are also crashing … Even aside from the New York civil suit, Trump’s legal outlook appears shakier than his political standing. Despite assistance from inept Federal Judge Aileen Cannon, he faces serious liability for stashing highly classified documents in unsecured locations at Mar-a-Lago. … Trump is left sputtering on his failing Truth Social platform.”

RIGHT-LEANING SENTIMENT

Another Legal Whopper Falls Flat

  • After years were spent investigating every inch of Trump’s finances AG James has very little to show for it, other than shaky underwriting.

  • Democrats have shown they will stop at nothing to take down their political opponents, creating hoaxes and fishing for crimes.

  • AG James is obsessed with bringing down Trump and his family, something she vowed to do during her campaign for office.

“Tish James’ Trump jihad purely political” Editorial Board, New York Post: “Like Captain Ahab clinging to the side of her white whale, Attorney General Tish James finally announced the result of her three-year investigation into Donald Trump: a civil suit that accuses him of overstating his assets. … Trump overvalued to convince banks to give him money, at the lowest interest rates possible. Whether for lack of due diligence, or because they didn’t care, they gave him the money. So James is rushing to the rescue of . . . big banks? What James appears not to have proven, that which blue-check Twitter has spent years salivating about, is tax fraud. She’s referring her case to the IRS but provides little proof of Trump undervaluing assets to pay less tax. Trump haters have to be disappointed. … all that James could even allege, in a civil case, is a real-estate developer lied to bankers… It’s pretty clear now why Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg didn’t pursue an indictment.”

“The Left Will Never Stop Going After Trump… or Any Republican in Their Way” Matt Margolis, PJ Media: “This investigation is only the latest in a long line of efforts by unhinged leftists to go after and stop Trump. From the Russian collusion hoax, to the raid on Trump's Mar-a-Lago home in Florida, to now this, there's no doubt the left will never stop trying to stop Trump. Even after the Russian collusion hoax failed miserably, they didn't concede defeat, they just kept on fishing for crimes. In their minds, they are morally obligated to stop him, even at the expense of a fair and objective system of justice. Democrats have long established that they are willing to abuse their powers and weaponize the government against their political enemies. And it won't stop with Tump either. ... they will always play dirty if it means they might tarnish a Republican who is a threat to their power.”

Set in Stone? Trump’s Approval Numbers Largely Unchanged

Polling data suggests former President Trump’s legal issues haven’t had a big impact on what Americans think of him.

Earlier this month 44% of respondents indicated they had a favorable opinion of Trump, compared to 53% who view him unfavorably. That’s more or less stable from what the same poll recorded earlier this summer, prior to the Mar-a-Lago raid or this week’s lawsuit.

The same poll found nearly 50% believe Trump has committed “serious federal crimes,” while 38% said he has not (New York Times/Siena College).
