LEFT-LEANING SENTIMENT

How Harris Can Distinguish Herself

The Top Argument From The Left: How Kamala Harris Can Fight the ‘Too Liberal’ Label, New York Magazine: Intelligencer, Ed Kilgore: “To a large extent, Harris’s issues profile is right in the center of her party, and Republicans waving the ‘too liberal’ banner may just simply excoriate positions very common among Democrats, such as support for what the Trump campaign calls the Green New Scam and federal abortion-rights legislation. But Team Trump will also try to associate Harris with ‘radicalism’ based explicitly on her geographical background and, more quietly, on her racial and gender identity. Republicans outside California have invested billions of dollars in typecasting the Golden State as a hellscape of crime, high taxes, overzealous regulation, rampant illegal immigration, voter fraud, and hedonistic culture. … Much of the plan to depict Harris as not only radical but “weird” will rely on negative stereotypes of California and the City by the Bay. … Harris will almost certainly respond to attacks on her record with abundant evidence of her tough-but-fair approach as a prosecutor… The battle to clearly define Kamala Harris will occur with incredible speed and intensity over the next 100 days. She needs to stay on the offensive and make sure Trump’s well-known flaws in character and outlook are front and center.”

RIGHT-LEANING SENTIMENT

An Enemy to Our Democracy

The Top Argument From The Right: Harris has a long record of undermining democracy, Editorial Board, The Washington Times; “Democrats are fond of slandering political rivals as enemies of our system of government. Vice President Kamala Harris is one of the worst offenders in this respect, asserting in a stump speech earlier this month that ‘Donald Trump wants to turn our democracy into a dictatorship.’ That’s a bold statement from someone who has all but clinched the Democratic presidential nomination without receiving a single vote in a free and fair primary election. …The authoritarian streak emerged during her aborted 2020 run for president, in which she articulated a vision of top-down power concentrated in Washington, freed from quaint concerns about the separation of powers. … In the twilight of her first presidential foray, Ms. Harris sponsored the Do No Harm Act, with the goal of watering down the Religious Freedom Restoration Act in a way that would coerce Americans to act contrary to their religious beliefs. She’s also not a fan of the other First Amendment privilege: free speech. She called on Twitter to censor the 2020 GOP candidate, taking away then-President Donald Trump’s ability to address the public directly. … Despite her record, Ms. Harris will continue to insist Mr. Trump is the “threat to democracy.” This is her projecting her own flaws on others.”

Where Polling Stands

A New York Times/Siena College poll shows Harris in a tight race with former President Donald Trump after replacing President Joe Biden as the likely Democratic nominee. Trump is at 48% and Harris at 47% among likely voters, marking a virtual tie. Including third-party candidates and Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Harris leads Trump 44% to 43% (Politico).
