LEFT-LEANING SENTIMENT

Trump Needs This More

The Top Argument From The Left: Forget conventional wisdom. Trump needs the debate more than Biden., E.J. Dionne Jr., The Washington Post: “Do not expect bursts of eloquence that will live on in history. Pay attention instead to which of these men better understands whom he needs to talk to. This will show you who has the discipline to win and be a decent president. … With at least 80 percent of Americans locked into their preferences, this debate matters most for the relatively small number of Americans who will tip the balance. But issues — abortion, protecting democracy and health care for Biden and immigration, crime and the cost of living for Trump — will matter to other pieces of the electorate that are up for grabs. …expect [Biden] to be disciplined enough to resist the temptation to make the debate primarily about his record. He knows he wins the election if it’s primarily about Trump. This suggests that the conventional wisdom about this debate — that it’s more important for Biden — is wrong. … Trump needs to energize more voters, constrain himself to look reasonable, hide his love of conspiracy theories and not make the debate about himself. Count me as skeptical that he can pull this off.

Honorable Mention #2: Ahead of debate, Trump struggles to play the expectations game, Steve Benen, MSNBC.

RIGHT-LEANING SENTIMENT

Make or Break Moment

The Top Argument From The Right: Experts Handicap the Trump-Biden Debate, Karl Rove, The Wall Street Journal: ”What [Biden and Trump] say, the impressions they leave, their confrontations, mistakes and humanizing moments could determine who wins in November. If one candidate has a particularly bad night, undecided and otherwise up-for-grabs voters could lock in for his opponent. Since the next debate comes nearly 11 weeks later, it’ll be difficult to rehabilitate a damaged campaign. To understand what each camp faces, I talked with five Republicans and three Democrats who have helped presidential candidates with debates Everyone agreed that both candidates face tests of self-awareness and impulse control. Mr. Biden must demonstrate sustained mental acuity. He can’t freeze, stare blankly or sound befuddled. Mr. Trump can’t come off as unhinged or enraged. The words ‘rigged election’ shouldn’t pass his lips. He has to keep his cool and can’t make it all about himself. The target voters who could be swayed aren’t either side’s true believers. Each party’s base will stick with its man, no matter what. Swing voters, however, can be moved by the debate and the subsequent conversation. Postdebate commentary, influenced by postdebate spin, will matter. … This election may remain close until the end, but if something can put one candidate solidly ahead, it’s next week’s debate. Get your popcorn. It’ll be a heck of a night.”

Rainbow Flag, Deplored Chores, Foreign Palms

On This Day in 1978, activists hoist a vibrant rainbow flag in the midst of the festivities for San Francisco’s Gay and Lesbian Freedom Day parade. According to its creator, Gilbert Baker, the crowd immediately recognized the flag’s significance: “It completely astounded me that people just got it, in an instant like a bolt of lightning—that this was their flag,” he later said. “It belonged to all of us.” This was the rainbow Pride flag, now an ubiquitous symbol of queer pride and liberation.

Today I learned palm trees are not native to Los Angeles.
