Lock Him Up or Trumped Up Charges?
Last Friday, the Department of Justice unsealed the federal indictment against former President Trump, alleging he improperly kept classified materials at his home in South Florida. This marks the first time a former president has been indicted on the federal level after Trump became the first former president to be indicted for any crime — allegedly, falsifying business records in New York City.

From The Flag: Trump has denied any wrongdoing, and the case delves into constitutional law, as well as who has the ultimate right to declassify information. Here’s more from both sides.
LEFT-LEANING SENTIMENT
Justice Is Coming, Despite “Deep State” Claims
Trump’s conduct forced the DOJ to act: he knowingly kept documents that he wasn’t allowed to have, and even mentioned them to visitors.
There are things we know and don’t know about the indictment, but one thing is for sure: it feels like justice is coming.
This is not a “weaponization of law enforcement,” but rather a true manifestation of “all Americans are equal under the law.”
Donald Trump Should Never Again Be Trusted With the Nation’s Secrets Editorial Board, New York Times: "Mr. Trump and his Republican allies are already trying to politicize the indictment, insisting that the charges issued by 23 randomly chosen residents of South Florida were an attempt by President Biden to demolish his rival. But the evidence compiled by the government is so substantial that it is clear the Justice Department had no choice but to indict. The indictment says that Mr. Trump not only took from the White House classified documents that he was not authorized to possess, but that he showed them to visitors and political cronies at his country club. ... The details in the indictment make it clear that Mr. Trump knew that he was not authorized to keep national security secrets in his possession, and that he played a cat-and-mouse game to conceal them from the F.B.I. and other federal officials."
Trump's Had This Coming for Years Michael Tomasky, The New Republic: "We know: This is historic. A never-before development for a 247-year-old democracy that has historically shown extraordinary deference to its presidents and ex-presidents. Trump and his defenders will twist this to suggest that he’s being attacked by a weaponized 'deep state.' ... Despite Trump’s ridiculous protestations, his flagrant disregard of classification laws makes this case very different from those of Mike Pence and Barack Obama and, most saliently, Joe Biden. Biden’s situation has not yet been resolved, and that may take some time. But it seems likely that some aides made some mistakes, and that’s what the probe will find, as it just did with Pence (I’m obviously no fan of Pence, but he, like Biden, is not a blatant lawbreaker). It will be important to keep pounding on this distinction, because Trump will hammer on it."

RIGHT-LEANING SENTIMENT
Democrats Sink Deeper in Their Unhinged Obsession
American political discourse increasingly emulates third-world “banana republics,” in which the party in power abuses the legal system.
Democrats are furious with Trump for winning in 2016, which thwarted their goal of single-party leadership.
This case will ultimately rise or fall on its merits, but there’s no disputing Trump is being treated more harshly than others.
Welcome to Your New Country The Editors, American Mind: "The news that former president Trump has been indicted on federal criminal charges related to his alleged mishandling of documents after leaving office marks a new milestone in America’s depressing descent to politics in the style of Peru or Turkey, where departed presidents and political opponents are put in prison as a matter of routine. The regime appears to be so besotted with Trump-hate that it is desperate to fling charges and indictments at him, for virtually anything. Following two inane and failed impeachments... we have been treated to a 'flood the zone' legal harassment campaign unrivaled in American history. Trump’s enemies—comprising more or less the entire federal government and its many penumbras; the media; academia; most of the corporate world; and a large portion of his own political party—have concocted a series of criminal and civil allegations so absurd that even the prosecutors bringing them have trouble containing their smirks."
Democrats' War Against Trump Is Absolutely Sickening Mark Levin, FOX News: "This is a disgusting, disgusting mark on American history for the future to come by these bandits in the White House, by the Democrat Party that don't play fair anymore. They don't want to just win elections, they want to take control of this country. ... and they have used the Department of Justice and the FBI to get what they want. ... The Presidential Records Act is not a criminal statute and it was never intended to be. The Espionage Act of 1917 was passed under Woodrow Wilson, another corrupt president. Woodrow Wilson used it to go after his adversaries and they imprisoned 2,000 people. So I suppose over there at the department of injustice and this clown prosecutor spent a lot of time at The Hague, they probably figured these laws could be used to try and entrap Trump."

Half Say Indictment Is Justified, but Republicans Hold Firm
Polling data shows just under half (48%) of all respondents feel Trump “should have been charged” in this case, while 35% say he should not have been, and 17% don’t know (ABC News/Ipsos).
A separate survey that polled Republicans found 76% consider the latest indictment to be “politically motivated,” while 61% say it “won’t change their views of Trump.
Eight in 10 say Trump should still be able to be president even if he is convicted on the charges related to classified documents (CBS News/YouGov).
