JAN. 6

In Demand Video

Last week, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy reportedly shared over 41,000 hours of January 6, 2021 surveillance camera footage with Tucker Carlson. The Fox News host then described it as “unfettered” access and said his team is studying the footage from that day’s events at the US Capitol.

From the Flag: Republican lawmakers say Carlson’s team can view the footage and request specific clips – provided no classified information is depicted. The DOJ and Capitol Police have expressed concerns that key information could be revealed, such as the location of some cameras. Here’s more from both sides.

RIGHT-LEANING SENTIMENT

Previously Buried Evidence Has Been Released – What Really Happened?

  • Mainstream media outlets showed no interest in this video for years, but now claim to want it – because Carlson will expose the truth.

  • Democrats are very afraid of what these videos will reveal, as there are still plenty of legitimate questions surrounding January 6.

  • Former Speaker Nancy Pelosi tried to have this video sealed away in the National Archives – and its release has caused a panic.

“Now That Tucker Has It, Corporate Media Are Suddenly Interested in Full Jan 6 Video” John Nolte, Breitbart: “For over two years, the fake media knew there was a buttload of video that the rigged January 6 Committee was not showing them. … The very same media outlets now demanding the full 41,000 hours spent two years dutifully broadcasted only the video Nancy Pelosi told them to broadcast. Where were they for two years? … We all know what’s going on here… The fake media are terrified the full context might prove what some people have been saying is true: that the Capitol Police did indeed open the doors to some of the same protesters facing legal action for trespassing. Who knows what else the video could show? Considering how corrupt the fascist FBI has become, nothing would surprise me anymore. The fake media also know Tucker will tell the truth.”

“Release of Jan. 6 video footage to Tucker Carlson is a five-alarm fire for Democrats” Elizabeth Stauffer, Washington Examiner Opinion: “For two years, Democrats, citing ‘security concerns,’ have managed to withhold this critical footage from the public, likely fearing it would contradict their carefully constructed narrative that the riot had been ‘an insurrection’ and ‘terrorist attack.’ … (Their) main problem with Carlson is that he has repeatedly questioned the decisions, actions, and motives of the Department of Justice, then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser, and the House Jan. 6 committee. Specifically, he’s asked why Pelosi and Bowser declined then-President Donald Trump’s offer of National Guard troops to protect the Capitol building after intelligence reports warned of the potential for violence. He has also publicly speculated about the role played by protester Ray Epps, who appeared to be a ringleader during the riot… (yet) was never prosecuted.”

LEFT-LEANING SENTIMENT

Speaker McCarthy Shatters Governmental Norms To Satisfy the Crazies

  • House Speaker Kevin McCarthy was reluctant to take this step but did so to appease the far-right wing of the Republican party.

  • The Supreme Court has established that the press has no right to government information, such as footage from security cameras.

  • It’s especially bad to share this footage with Tucker Carlson, who has spread conspiracy theories regarding January 6.

“In Sharing Video With Fox Host, McCarthy Hits Rewind on Jan. 6” Broadwater & Swan, New York Times: “Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s decision to grant the Fox News host Tucker Carlson exclusive access to thousands of hours of security footage from inside the Capitol during the Jan. 6, 2021, attack was his latest move to appease the right wing of his party, this time by effectively outsourcing a bid to reinvestigate the riot to its favorite cable news commentator, who has circulated conspiracy theories about the assault. The most conservative Republican members of Congress — many of whom have worked to downplay or deny the reality of the Jan. 6 attack — have been pushing Mr. McCarthy for weeks to release the video after he promised to do so during his campaign for speaker. Mr. McCarthy… is sensitive to the dangers of angering his hard-core base by seeming to drop or disregard the matter.”

“Giving Tucker Carlson Jan. 6 video violates the First Amendment” Michael I. Meyerson, Baltimore Sun Opinion: “When the Republican Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy gave Fox News’ leading election denier, Tucker Carlson, exclusive access to surveillance footage from the Jan. 6, 2021 insurrection, he not only created a serious risk that information related to the security of the Capitol will be released to those who might plan the next attack. He also violated the First Amendment. … The Supreme Court has repeatedly held that there is no First Amendment right to government information. As Chief Justice Warren Burger declared in 1978, the Constitution is not a Freedom of Information Act and does not mandate that the government affirmatively provide access to information. … The harm to First Amendment values is even greater in the case of Carlson, since the discrimination in access is designed to favor someone who supports Rep. McCarthy’s partisan interests.”

A Major Problem for Democracy? Depends on Your Politics

Polling conducted last summer after the January 6 hearings were held found 69% of respondents consider that day’s events to be a “crisis or major problem for democracy.”

Along party lines, 96% of Democrats agreed with that statement, while just 36% of Republicans felt the same.

Around 4 in 10 said they closely followed the January 6 hearings, including 55% of Democrats and 28% of Republicans (CNN/SSRS).
