Debate Duel in Philly

Today’s Top Story: Tonight, Vice President Harris and former President Trump will face off in their first debate since Harris became the Democratic nominee, hosted by ABC News at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia.

Reporting from the Right: Trump allies offer debate strategies to beat Harris: 'Already knocked one Democrat out' (Fox News)

Reporting from the Left: Harris and Trump face major challenges, risks on Tuesday's presidential debate stage (ABC News)

RIGHT-LEANING SENTIMENT

Trump and Harris Each Have a Job To Do

The Top Argument From The Right: Trump and Harris Get Set to Debate, Peggy Noonan, The Wall Street Journal: “What does Donald Trump have to do? He has to demonstrate he’s sane enough, stable enough and knowledgeable enough to make wavering, centrist and independent voters grow more comfortable with the idea of “The Trump Presidency, Act II.” How might he do that? If I were advising him I’d say by presenting himself as calm, reasonable, laid back, even friendly. … He shouldn’t start out swinging; he should answer questions with spirit but steadiness. This might have the added benefit of putting Kamala Harris off her game. She probably expects jumpy aggressions and sarcasm. She will no doubt come armed with a handful of well-prepared lines aimed at piercing his armor or deflecting his attacks. … What does Ms. Harris have to demonstrate? That she is strong. That she is prepared. That she is smart. That she has sufficient gravitas. That she sometimes gets a thoughtful look because sometimes she has thoughts. … More and more I am getting the impression this will be a path election, not a person election. … I’m feeling that a lot of people this year will be choosing the path, not the person. They’ll put up with the person, but it’s the path they want.”

LEFT-LEANING SENTIMENT

Harris and Trump Each Have a Job To Do

The Top Argument From The Left: The debate is Tuesday. Here’s what Trump and Harris need to do., Michael Steele, MSNBC: “Since this could be the only debate between Trump and Harris, it’s essential for her to pin Trump down as the charlatan that he is. At the same time, she must also build her case in the eyes of persuadable voters. … This is another chance for Harris to reintroduce herself to voters who didn’t tune into the Democratic National Convention. … Harris should be careful about framing herself as a former prosecutor on the stage with a criminal. My bet is that many voters won’t take a full-throated prosecution of Trump very well. Americans want a president, not a prosecutor. … She must build a permission structure for Republicans, independents, and, yes, even some Democrats to vote for her. … By contrast, Trump has a different set of goals on Tuesday night. He has gotten a lot of people to trust him despite his nonsensical rantings, promises to be a dictator on "day one" and his failure to deliver on much of his first-term agenda beyond Supreme Court appointments and tax cuts for wealthy individuals. There has not been much from his first term or even now that speaks to small business owners or the shrinking middle class.”
