🇺🇸 Crown Passed Down
Plus, we promise to Never Forget.
POWERED BY
Good morning, and happy Monday. Yesterday marked the 21st anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Close to 3,000 people lost their lives in an event that changed our country and the world forever. We promise to Never Forget.
We, as a brand, also promise to never forget the way our country acted in the wake of the attacks. There were so many people waiting to donate blood that we didn't have enough bags for storage. Or, how about when 150 Members of Congress broke into an impromptu rendition of “God Bless America" on the Capitol building's East Front steps? And in early October 2001, 79% of adults said they had displayed an American flag.
In a word, we felt truly "United" or as if we were living up to our name. As we inch into another week, and another fall, remember to be kind to one another, even if they see the world differently than you. In 2002, Sandy Dahl, wife of Flight 93 pilot Jason Dahl said, “If we learn nothing else from this tragedy, we learn that life is short and there is no time for hate.” May we never forget that.

From The Flag: Following her father’s death in 1952 Elizabeth ascended to the throne at the age of 25. This past February her Platinum Jubilee marked the 70th anniversary of that ascension. Her passing has brought about numerous stories, historical notes, and debates concerning aspects of the royal family. Here’s more from both sides.
RIGHT-LEANING SENTIMENT
Saying Good Bye to a Tremendous Lady, and a Magnificently Loyal Ally
While the US has an odd relationship with the British crown due to the very nature of our founding, Elizabeth II never made it awkward.
The Queen effectively avoided giving political opinions and displayed a unique charisma throughout her long reign.
Queen Elizabeth II was a staunch American ally who broke with tradition by singing the US national anthem after 9/11.
“A Crown Worn Well” Joseph S. Laughon, The American Conservative: “America is haunted by monarchy, but Elizabeth II made its presence feel comforting and familial, rather than eerie. … Here in the United States, Elizabeth II occupied a strange position. While naturally holding no official position in the American government, she was almost omnipresent, as she remained on the throne through fourteen presidencies. … Despite ourselves we have always retained some attachment to the idea of a monarchy, and to the British monarchy in particular. … The pomp and circumstance of the White House, the First Lady, and the State of the Union more than slightly resemble Buckingham Palace, the Royal family, and the Speech from the Throne. … For multiple generations of Americans, she has gracefully reflected to us something that we feel a longing for in our own civic life: the necessity of religion, a commitment to the common good, and a defense of the timeless.”
“Queen Elizabeth II” Editorial Board, Wall Street Journal: “As the old empire evolved into a Commonwealth, and as the nations within the United Kingdom struggled toward new constitutional arrangements, the monarchy has proven to be a steadying influence for a country in transition from a great power to a still significant one. Much of this is the result of Queen Elizabeth’s approach to her office. She eschewed politics in a way her son and heir Charles has found difficult to do. Her personal views on the important political questions of her reign, from the Suez crisis to Brexit, remained unknown for many years after events and sometimes to this day. She mastered the art of being present in the public eye without attracting the tabloid headlines that have marked her children and grandchildren. … Her unique charisma tended to obscure the anachronism that is any hereditary monarchy, which leaves to fate the question of whether a country will get the leader it needs at the right time.”

LEFT-LEANING SENTIMENT
Keeping Everything in Historical Context, God Bless the Queen
The Queen deserves to be celebrated for her commitment to duty, but the end-stage colonial era she oversaw cannot be forgotten.
While some in the UK are pro or against the monarchy, there’s no denying that this is a massive moment in history.
Queen Elizabeth II helped maintain the royal family’s legitimacy and stability, but that may change now that she’s gone.
“Mourn the Queen, Not Her Empire” Maya Jasanoff, New York Times Op-ed: “The queen embodied a profound, sincere commitment to her duties… and for her unflagging performance of them, she will be rightly mourned. She has been a fixture of stability, and her death in already turbulent times will send ripples of sadness around the world. But we should not romanticize her era. For the queen was also an image: the face of a nation that, during the course of her reign, witnessed the dissolution of nearly the entire British Empire into some 50 independent states and significantly reduced global influence. By design as much as by the accident of her long life, her presence as head of state and head of the Commonwealth, an association of Britain and its former colonies, put a stolid traditionalist front over decades of violent upheaval. As such, the queen helped obscure a bloody history of decolonization whose proportions and legacies have yet to be adequately acknowledged.”
“The Queen Is Dead. This Is Only the Beginning.” Imogen West-Knights, Slate: “... our brand-new Prime Minister Liz Truss… will find it hard to beat the ‘murdered the queen’ charges given that they met just two days ago to officially begin her tenure … Whatever your feelings about the queen, and feelings vary dramatically, everybody understands that as news events go, this is the big kahuna. There are monarchists in this country who love the queen like their own grandmother, and anti-monarchists who would spit on the ground where she walks. … And it’s a strange time for this to be happening. The UK is not doing well. Skyrocketing energy prices, the hideous current cost of living, and general dissent about how difficult this coming winter is going to be (are) extraordinary things to converge with having a new king, not least one who is as unpopular as Charles is.”
One more opinion piece from the Left: True to her word, Elizabeth II remained devoted to “the service of our great imperial family” John Quelch, Miami Herald Op-ed

Cave Paintings, Water Planets, Draining A Lake
On September 12, 1940, Near Montignac, France, a collection of prehistoric cave paintings were discovered by four teenagers who stumbled upon the ancient artwork after following their dog down a narrow entrance into a cavern. The 15,000- to 17,000-year-old paintings, consisting mostly of animal representations, are among the finest examples of art from the Upper Paleolithic period.
