Cooking With Gas

Earlier this month, a federal official said regulators are considering a ban on natural gas stoves after research suggested a link between them and childhood asthma. The White House quickly said no such plan was in the works, but not before controversy ensued.

From The Flag: Passions have been inflamed, turning up the heat on the issue, as some people love their gas oven and refuse to give it up. A ban would theoretically apply to new construction, rather than confiscation. Here’s more from both sides.

Democrats’ Current Plan: Demonize Natural Gas To Fight Climate Change

  • This is part of leftists’ goal to ban natural gas altogether, which has already started at the local and state levels.

  • The government wants to take more options away from consumers, even though climate alarmists should embrace natural gas.

  • At best, the childhood asthma risk is dubious, but Democrats figure a health scare will help them achieve their climate change goals.

“They’re Coming for Your Gas Stoves and They’ve Already Started” Jenny Beth Martin, RealClearPolitics: “First they declared they were coming for our natural gas stoves; then, after a firestorm of opposition erupted, they denied it. Don’t believe the denial. They’re definitely coming for our gas stoves – just like they came for our dishwashers, our shower heads, our toilets, and our gasoline-powered cars before them. … The move against gas stoves is only the most recent Biden Administration move against natural gas. A month ago, the Energy Department proposed banning federal buildings from using fossil fuels. Yet the feds are late to the game… Across the nation, more than 100 progressive municipalities and states have taken steps to ‘require or encourage the move off fossil fuels to all-electric homes and buildings,’ according to the Rocky Mountain Institute, a progressive think tank pushing a green energy agenda.”

“Banning gas stoves gets Americans’ blood boiling” Liz Peek, The Hill Op-ed: “We already lost incandescent light bulbs… We also are forbidden to buy appliances like certain washer-dryers and items like toilets that actually work. … Now it seems some Washington bureaucrats want to get rid of gas stoves, the go-to appliance for anyone who takes cooking seriously… Though ostensibly stemming from concerns about children’s health, the idea of a ban almost certainly relates to climate policy as well. For the federal government to ban gas stoves, and generally to oppose natural gas as an energy source, is nuts. The reason that greenhouse emissions declined 20 percent in the United States between 2005 and 2020 is that we have replaced coal and oil with cleaner, abundant and cheap natural gas. Since 2005, we have doubled our production of natural gas, thanks to horizontal drilling and fracking, which has also reduced our reliance on imported oil.”

  • People have been misled as to the benefits of cooking with natural gas, largely due to the lobbying efforts of gas companies.

  • It’s amusing to see conservative men work themselves into a fury over gas stoves, but no ban is coming, and this is a false outrage.

How Much Should You Worry?” Farhad Manjoo, New York Times Opinion: “The natural-gas-powered appliances in your home may be slowly killing you and everyone you love. … The dangers are well documented. Gas-fired water heaters — even the more efficient, tankless kind — regularly puff out clouds of methane, a greenhouse gas… Every minute that it’s in your house, even when it’s turned off, your gas stove may be flatulating dangerous pollutants and climate-warming gases into your kitchen. About 13 percent of cases of childhood asthma in the United States may be attributable to gas cooktops… similar to that of exposure to secondhand smoke. So what’s a homeowner to do? If you spend time around environmentalists or energy experts, you’ll hear a simple answer: Electrify! Most gas appliances can now be replaced with healthier and more efficient alternatives powered by electricity.”

“The great gas stove debate has been reignited” Kirsi Goldynia, CNN Opinion: “Chef Andrew Gruel… taped himself to his gas stove in protest of a possible gas ban. … Food writer and chef Alison Roman (argues) it is entirely possible to cook intricate and delectable meals sans gas, (but) it’s clear that the general public has deep-seated misgivings about it. … But why? When it comes to most consumer products, we love upgrades and innovation. What is it about gas stoves that keep us from moving past this centuries-old technology? The most obvious answer is public misconception. People seem convinced that it is much harder – perhaps even impossible – to cook a quality meal with electricity. And this perception was not created by accident. … advertising by gas companies is largely responsible for popularizing gas stoves in kitchens by promoting them as a sign of wealth and high design.”

Polling conducted last year found 50% of respondents are either very or somewhat likely to choose a natural gas oven, down from 55% in 2021.

Asked what type of oven they use currently, 59% said electric, while 39% said gas (Morning Consult).

Energy Information Administration data supports that 38% of US households use natural gas for cooking, but percentages are higher in traditionally “blue states,” such as California, New Jersey, Illinois, and New York (Newsweek).
