Biden His Time

During an interview aired this past weekend on CBS News’ “60 Minutes”, President Joe Biden addressed a wide range of domestic and foreign policy issues, as well as whether he plans to run for reelection in 2024.

Reporting From the Left: Biden on ‘60 Minutes’: ‘The pandemic is over’ (POLITICO)

From The Flag: Reaction has keyed in on several aspects of the conversation, including Biden’s thoughts on inflation, his assertion the US would send troops in defense of Taiwan, and his belief that the pandemic is “over”. Here’s more from both sides.

RIGHT-LEANING SENTIMENT

Biden Makes Series of Missteps During ‘60 Minutes’ Softball

  • This was the president’s first interview in 223 days and it effectively demonstrated how Democrats can utilize the left-leaning media to their advantage.

  • In the span of one interview Biden highlighted why he rarely takes questions, as he made several gaffes and issued comments that will be walked back.

  • By declaring “the pandemic is over,” Biden has undermined his student loan cancellation argument.

“Rare lucid and coherent moment for Biden on ‘60 Minutes’” John Podhoretz, New York Post Opinion: “Stop the presses. Hold the phone. Reboot the internet. Joe Biden gave a reporter an interview. For the first time in 223 days. … Maybe it’s a low bar to say he didn’t seem senile in his exchanges with Scott Pelley on “60 Minutes” — but he didn’t, and that’s not nothing for the guy, considering the way he seemed during the first half of this year, at least. … He chose well for his first interviewer since February. Scott Pelley started out respectful and then, by degrees, started to resemble a lapdog. In a voice-over, as he and Biden walked around the Oval Office, Pelley mused that Biden has been around for so long, his recent legislative successes suggest ‘maybe there’s something to be said for know-how.’ Biden’s own press people couldn’t have said it better. Bravo, Scott Pelley!”

“Cleanup on Aisle 46: Joe Biden makes a mess of his 60 Minutes interview” Monica Showalter, American Thinker: “Based on this interview, it's pretty obvious to the public why he doesn't give many interviews. But it's also pretty indicative of how inchoate and foolish Biden really is. How is it that Biden can score an interview with the softest of the softball players at 60 Minutes, with the fawningest of the fawning interviewers, and still blow it? … If this is how badly they do with fawners and flatterers and lickspittles, all of whom will do anything to make them look good, how would these people handle a real interviewer with real questions, of the kind the public is answering? They can't even handle the fawners without making messes for themselves and their administration. Imagine them in a room with real journalists. It goes to show that the Biden administration really has no business being in office or power, simply on competence grounds alone.”

LEFT-LEANING SENTIMENT

Combat Joe Is Back in More Ways Than One As Midterms Approach

  • The president is on the offensive in recent weeks, as every now and then he rejects idealism and confronts the MAGA threat head-on.

  • During the interview Biden firmly committed to sending US troops into battle if China invades Taiwan, something the White House has attempted to walk back in the past.

  • While it previously seemed like a given that Biden would run in 2024, he wavered on that during the interview, adding more turmoil to the midterm elections.

“The Return of Combat Joe” Charles M. Blow, New York Times Opinion: “Whenever Joe Biden goes on the offensive, there are observations that he’s being combative, as if it were foreign to him, as if it were a new strategy he had only now begun to employ. But this combative Biden in fact makes regular appearances. He is summoned when needed or forced to emerge under pressure. He is the Hulk to Biden’s Bruce Banner. … Biden presented himself as a candidate who could unify the country… (He) often drifts back into that idealism, seemingly longing for and lost in a long-gone politics in which bipartisanship was more common and an antidemocratic opposition party was unfathomable. But then reality resurfaces, and he is reminded that he is in a war, not just a disagreement. He is reminded — and must remind the country — that these are dire times. … Combat Joe appears periodically, and now is another of those periods. … Welcome back.”

“Biden’s most hawkish comments on Taiwan yet” Aaron Blake, Washington Post: “The steady erosion of the long-standing U.S. policy of ‘strategic ambiguity’ toward China and Taiwan has now resulted in its rhetorical — if not official — demise, with President Biden firmly committing to send troops to defend Taiwan if China invades. Even though US presidents have generally avoided taking a position on the subject, Biden has gestured in the direction of the United States defending Taiwan militarily. The White House insisted each time that there was no change in official policy. Each time, that was undermined by Biden’s own comments… And now those assurances are virtually impossible to square with Biden’s comments. In an interview with ‘60 Minutes,’ Biden was decidedly unambiguous. Asked twice whether US forces would defend Taiwan, he said they would. … That’s a US president firmly committing to go to war. And it’s the latest in a series of increasingly hawkish comments on the matter.”

The President Says the Pandemic Is Over. Do Americans Agree?

President Biden’s approval rating has increased in recent months from a low point of 36% in July to 45% as of this month (AP-NORC).

Meanwhile, poll results released at the end of August showed 50% approve of Biden’s handling of COVID-19, compared with 45% who disapprove (Quinnipiac University).

Finally, in a poll released last week 65% of Americans said there is a “small” or “no risk” in returning to their normal, pre-COVID life. Slightly less than half (46%) said they’d already returned to normal, which is the highest mark recorded since the pandemic first hit US shores (IPSOS).
