UNITED NATIONS

Biden’s Final Global Message

Today’s Top Story: On Tuesday, President Biden, in his final address to the UN General Assembly, emphasized managing competition with China, strengthening Indo-Pacific alliances, combating climate change and the opioid crisis, supporting Ukraine, and addressed conflicts in Gaza, Sudan, and the Middle East.

LEFT-LEANING SENTIMENT

Legacy in “Purgatory”

The Top Argument From The Left: Biden walks off the U.N. stage, leaving behind ‘purgatory’, Ishaan Tharoor, The Washignton Post: “Biden assumed the role of an elder statesman shuffling off the world stage, offering wisdom and perspective to the assembled heads of state. … It was a somewhat timid coda for a leader brimming with bravura on the campaign trail four years ago. Biden had vowed to fully ‘restore’ U.S. leadership in the world after the disruptions and anxieties provoked by former president Donald Trump’s ultranationalism. But on Tuesday, he took a more defensive pose, highlighting his work to preserve democracy and to bring resolution to the disastrous wars in Ukraine and Gaza. Biden’s characteristic optimism struck a discordant note amid the frustrations and gloom on show at the United Nations. … The present day may be more volatile, the U.N. chief suggested, as states and rogue actors break international law with growing impunity. The rise of new powers, chiefly China, and the waning of the United States’ ‘unipolar’ moment — when the nation seemed a paramount, peerless superpower — is leading to an uncertain future.”

RIGHT-LEANING SENTIMENT

Narcissistic Myth-Making

The Top Argument From The Right: A weak and delusional Biden at the UN, Washington Examiner: “President Joe Biden delivered his final address as president to the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday, and it was a masterpiece of narcissistic myth-making. It was a speech of hollow boasts that couldn’t have been delivered at a worse time, as America is increasingly disregarded and disrespected around the world by enemies and allies alike. Casting himself as a great defender of democracy worldwide, Biden tried to turn the coup that removed him as the leader of his own party into an act of historic self-sacrifice. … Biden called on the U.N. delegations to ‘stand behind the principles that united us’ and ‘stand firm against aggression.’ If only Biden had a record of standing firm against aggression. He failed to confront Iran. By tolerating repeated attacks on American troops by Iranian-directed militias in Iraq, Biden meekly allowed hundreds of Americans to be wounded and some to be killed. Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei took Biden’s passivity as a green light for maximum troublemaking. Iran continues to plot the assassinations of the U.S. military officials it blames for the January 2020 killing of its terrorist mastermind, Qassem Soleimani, and it continues to support the Houthis as it wreaks havoc on international civilian shipping.”

Honorable Mention #1: Biden’s Pathetic U.N. Speech, Dan McLaughlin, National Review.
