Biden Boldly Bows Out

Today’s Top Story in One Sentence: On Sunday, President Joseph R. Biden officially withdrew from the 2024 presidential election, which he announced in a letter posted on X.

Reporting from the Left: Biden drops out of 2024 race after weeks of pressure, endorses Harris (MSNBC)

Reporting from the Right: Biden ends bid for second term in White House, endorses Kamala Harris (Fox News)

LEFT-LEANING SENTIMENT

A Selfless Decision

The Top Argument From The Left: Biden and his team reach the right decision, Jennifer Rubin, The Washington Post: “In an extraordinary act of patriotism and self-awareness, President Biden announced Sunday he would step away from his own reelection campaign. Although he had seemingly cut himself off from seasoned voices in his party and was portrayed as huddled in his bunker, in the end he did listen to the overwhelming number of senior Democrats, donors and ordinary voters. He put his party and country first. … It was a remarkable decision for a family that has devoted its life to politics. Postponing defeat so often seems easier than leveling with a loved one; the perspective a family member has of a father, husband and grandfather often departs sharply from how other people view him. … Biden had gotten to this unsustainable position largely because of his own history and outlook and the understandable defensiveness of aides and family. However, Biden and his inner circle eventually managed to recognize that the potential consequences of maintaining a faltering campaign — a devastating November loss, permanent damage to democracy, crushing down-ballot loses — could irreparably mar his legacy and endanger America. … Biden therefore stands to go down as one of the most accomplished modern presidents, but also one of the most selfless.”

RIGHT-LEANING SENTIMENT

If He Can’t Run, He Can’t Serve

The Top Argument From The Right: Joe Biden Should Resign the Presidency, The Editors, National Review: “ Biden should take the next logical step and resign the presidency. It’s possible to imagine a president not being able to campaign but still being capable of carrying out his official duties — say, if he had a serious physical impairment. … Whatever the level of his decline at the moment, it is sure to get worse. The country deserves to have complete assurance that the president of the United States, whatever his party or ideology, is fully in possession of his faculties. … Democrats wouldn’t be in this fix if Biden and his family had taken full accounting of his aging when they decided to run again last year and if the White House, Democratic leaders, the press, and various other insiders hadn’t undertaken an effort to cover up Biden’s state. They all knew what was going on but figured that if they didn’t talk about it, somehow people wouldn’t notice. Of course, they did. That cover-up was intended to deceive the American people, but its first victims were Democratic primary voters, who were denied a real choice or a real say in their party’s nominee. The serious potential candidates were sidelined by pressure to close ranks publicly behind Biden, who refused to debate the few, marginal primary opponents he attracted.”

FLAG THIS

Harris v. Trump

With Biden exiting the 2024 race, Vice President Kamala Harris becomes the Democratic frontrunner. Polls show a tight contest against Former President Donald Trump:

  • NBC News finds Trump leading Biden 45%-43% and Harris 47%-45%, within the margin of error.

  • CBS News/YouGov shows Trump ahead of Biden by 5 points and Harris by 3 among likely voters.

  • Harris performs slightly better than Biden in battleground states and attracts more support from voters considering third-party options, leading Trump 46%-39%.

All candidates have similar positive-negative ratings, but Harris has a higher proportion of neutral voters, indicating potential for growth (NBC News).

On This Day in 1999, the music festival Woodstock ’99 opened. The festival—timed to the 30th anniversary of the original Woodstock—attempts to bring the spirit of peace, music, and love to a new generation; instead it devolves into three days of scorching heat, raw sewage, misogyny and greed in upstate New York.

Today I learned you’re taller in the morning.
