Griner v. Russia

LEFT-LEANING SENTIMENT
More Needs to Be Done
- Griner must be released, but the US needs to confront its own history of detaining foreign prisoners.
- Many Americans who know Grinerâs story arenât convinced the Biden administration is doing enough to secure her release.
- If the US gave womenâs basketball the respect it deserves, the WNBA star might not be in legal jeopardy.
âIf we want Russia to free Brittney Griner, Americans must show some principles ourselvesâ LZ Granderson, LA Times Opinion: âAsadullah Haroon Gul went home last week. Since 2007, the Afghan native had been detained at Guantanamo Bay â without a trial. Serendipitous timing, wouldnât you say? ⊠Iâm not suggesting we are the villains in this story. I am simply pointing out we are not the only ones with a story to tell. The world hears our voice, but it also sees our actions. The more those two drift apart, the more interesting observers will find the other stories about who and what we are. Keeping a prisoner detained for 15 years without a trial is more than just a bad look: Itâs the antithesis of who we say we are. But to keep that same prisoner detained months after one of our own federal judges ruled that doing so was unlawful ⊠well, with this kind of mentality here in the US, itâs no mystery why some of our friends give us the side eye.â
âU.S. officials say they're doing all they can for Brittney Griner. Are they?â Dave Zirin, MSNBC Opinion: âWhere is Biden? Where is Secretary of State Antony Blinken? These are the questions being asked not just by Cherelle Griner (Grinerâs wife), but also by people in and outside the WNBA who are bereft over the Brittney Grinerâs continued imprisonment. Russian officials say they caught her in an airport outside Moscow with vape cartridges containing cannabis oil. Cherelle Griner was mostly silent in March and April, as she followed the advice of the State Department whose officials told that her they were negotiating through back channels. But after the State Department said Brittney Griner was 'wrongfully detained,' she began spearheading a public campaign to free her wife. ⊠Weâve seen protests on Brittney Grinerâs behalf in New York, Washington and other cities. People are shouting out her name in the hopes that their cries will land upon Bidenâs ears.â

RIGHT-LEANING SENTIMENT
Putin Is Using Grinerâs Detainment as Leverage
- Biden has failed to return America to a place of respect on the international stage, something he promised to do.
- We want Griner to be released, but Americans who are traveling abroad need to respect the laws of the country theyâre in.
- Grinerâs arrest should be a huge wake-up call for obnoxious social justice warriors who are blind to how good they have it in America.
âJoe Bidenâs âno oneâs homeâ presidencyâ Editorial Board, NY Post: âRemember those (brief) shining moments when the world hailed the election of Joe Biden as a return to competence? Turns out Uncle Joe couldnât even manage to keep US Embassy phone lines open. WNBA star Brittney Griner â detained for months by Russia, and whom Biden has so far failed to free â couldnât get through to her wife Cherelle via an embassy line despite calling 11 times on a date arranged weeks in advance. Why? Because no embassy staffer was there to pick up the phone and connect them. White House flack Karine Jean-Pierre called this an âunfortunate mistake.â Ya think? Cherelle Griner did not spare the Biden administration any vitriol in her response to the situation. âHow can I trust you to actually be negotiating on my wifeâs behalf to come home,â she thundered. The mess is symptomatic of how Biden operates.â
âBrittney Griner's plightâ Sally Zelikovsky, The American Thinker Opinion: âRussia is a sovereign nation that has strict anti-drug laws. Progressive politicians like [Sheila Jackson Lee] and naĂŻve American travelers like Griner have to realize that the world isn't always what you want it to be and, more often than not, can be much crueler than what you are used to. We feel for Griner and her friends, family, and teammates, and we pray she is released ASAP. But, at the time this happened on Saturday, March 5, after weeks warning Americans not to travel to Russia, the State Department issued an advisory that any Americans remaining in Russia should leave immediately. As Griner made a dash for the exits, she should have had the sense to leave her vaping paraphernalia behind. It is incumbent on Americans traveling abroad to comply with the laws of the host countries. If you refuse, you do so at your own risk.â

If the US government canât get Russia to stop the Ukraine invasion what makes anyone think they will release Griner anytime soon? Besides she would not be in this mess if she followed the rules of the countries she is in. Other countries around the world take drug use/possession a lot more serious than the US does and she should have known that and followed their rules. She created her situation so let her deal with the consequences of her own doing.
I agree. If you break the law you need to accept the consequences. It appears she knew what she was doing. Iâm not convinced we should be doing anything to assist in her release. While that may sound harsh, choices have consequences and we seem to have forgotten that.
One gets what one âownsâ:âŠanother too-highly paid athlete thinking that she can get away with anything she can. Pay the price, Grindr, for your utter stupidity! OMGâŠ.
This is called Karma. The US government is still unable to help many other people detained in other countries. Itâs not as easy as many think and her case is probably one of those that are less important than those people left in Afghanistan, etc., â people who actually fought for the US. She chose to do what she did and where to go herself â typically flouting laws like most over-indulged sports people and probably her wealthy associates will get her out â like all big money does. Plus she is probably being treated better than most political prisoners because she is anti-America in general. They find her a useful tool.
I basically agree with the other posters. You cannot expect to be bailed out by Old Joe if you violate the laws of the country you are visiting. The fact that fair trials are usually a rarity in Russia, cannot be helped. Part of the risk of international travel.
I donât think that Greiner âintentionallyâ violated the Russian laws if this does make a difference. However, bottom line, she is an American citizen and belongs home and stop the politics and personal biases.
If someone breaks the law, they should be held accountable and serve whatever the punishment is rendered. Just because she is a WMBA player, doesnât mean we try harder to get her released. Now Russiaâs invasion of Ukraine does complicate the situation along with her same sex, âso called marriage.â
