CLIMATE CHANGE

Euro Inferno

A historic heatwave is hitting Europe. The UK logged its hottest day on record yesterday, hitting 102.4 degrees Fahrenheit in south England.

News Coverage from the Right: UK braces for record-breaking temperatures as heatwave plunges Brits into chaos (New York Post)

News Coverage from the Left: Heat-related deaths top 1,100 in Spain, Portugal amid heat wave and wildfires (ABC News)

From The Flag: UK authorities recently declared the first-ever “red extreme” heat warning for parts of England, while France, Spain, and Portugal are also dealing with deadly temperatures. Here’s the latest commentary from both sides.

LEFT-LEANING SENTIMENT

A Planet on Fire While World Sits on Hands

  • The world is experiencing a series of heatwaves all at once, highlighting the pressing need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Heat waves are becoming more commonplace as the planet warms, but there’s still time to make changes and avoid suffering.
  • It seems the deadly impact of heatwaves is being ignored, all while politicians do nothing to stem the coming carnage.

“The global heat waves should be a warning for the future” Editorial Board, Washington Post: “In Yosemite National Park’s famed Mariposa Grove, giant sequoias have grown for millennia. … This month, they were threatened by a nearby wildfire that was exacerbated by dry, hot conditions. … Western Europe is also experiencing extreme heat waves … These cases should not be viewed in isolation. While links between individual weather events and global warming cannot be determined immediately, studies have found that concurrent heat waves affecting parts of North America, Europe and Asia have become more intense and frequent over the past few decades. … Such patterns have disastrous, far-reaching effects. Heat waves pose a particular threat to global food supplies, already under pressure from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. They are linked with a range of health problems and correlate with higher rates of crime, anxiety and depression.”

“European heat wave isn't a surprise — it's a warning of what inaction could mean for our future” Nicole Mortillaro, CBC: “Europe is living in a disaster movie. … Roads in France are under threat of literally melting. Rail lines are in danger of buckling. Runways at airports are forced to shut down. Wildfires are spreading across several countries as thousands evacuate their homes. … At one time, this may have sounded like hyperbole, but the fact is every year countries around the world break long-standing temperature records… Looking at Britain, Spain and Portugal, where temperatures either soared near 40 C or above that, it's a stark reminder that without serious action we will face temperatures we've never seen before. In recent years, the continent has had several heat waves and will face more with a warming planet. But there is still time, scientists say, to avoid tens of thousands of deaths and to reduce the suffering of millions.”

RIGHT-LEANING SENTIMENT

The Air Is Certainly Hot: Politicians and the Media Are Full of It

  • Many are quick to blame climate change when in reality weather fluctuates, and politicians don’t really care about people’s pain.
  • The dogmatic mindset behind climate change lacks scientific curiosity and offers no practical solutions.
  • A summer heatwave is being classified as a “national emergency” to empower UK bureaucrats and keep people afraid.

“All the Heat in Europe” Editorial Board, Wall Street Journal: “The vast majority of homes lack air conditioning and many public spaces also lack adequate cooling … The climate lobbyists in media and politics blame every turn in the weather on climate change... (but) any season’s temperature shifts are far more attributable to variations in weather. Europe in recent decades has spent hundreds of billions of dollars reducing its carbon-dioxide emissions, which are now half of their 1990 level in emissions per dollar of GDP. These reductions have come at the cost of less reliable energy and greater vulnerability to Vladimir Putin. Even if one believes carbon emissions alone cause any and all climate changes, further European emissions reductions will do nothing to alter global temperatures without much bigger cuts from China, India and developing countries in Africa that aren’t going to happen. Meanwhile, as European leaders boast about supporting net-zero emissions targets in 2050… they aren’t investing nearly enough in mitigation and adaptation in 2022.”

“The heatwave green hysteria is out of control” Brendan O’Neill, The Spectator: “If you find yourself wondering over the next few days why it is so swelteringly hot, I have an answer for you. It’s because of rich people. It’s because of those wealthy elites with all their gas-guzzling vehicles … Is anyone else tiring of all this green hysteria over the heatwave? There is something medieval about it. There is something creepily pre-modern in the idea that sinful mankind has brought heat and fire and floods upon himself with his wicked, hubristic behavior. What next – plagues of locusts as a punishment for our failure to recycle? The unhinged eco-dread over the heatwave exposes how millenarian environmentalism has become. Climate-change activism is less and less about coming up with practical solutions to the problem of pollution and more about demonizing mankind as a plague on a planet, a pox on Mother Earth.”

Moon Landing, Mea Culpa, Eleanor's Press Conferences

On July 20, 1969, at 10:56 pm EDT, American astronaut Neil Armstrong, 240,000 miles from Earth, spoke these words to more than a billion people listening at home: “That’s one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind.” Stepping off the lunar landing module Eagle, Armstrong became the first human to walk on the surface of the moon.
